Supermarkets and plastic bags!

Why do supermarkets insist on wrapping everything in plastic and, then offering plastic bags at the check-out and, in some cases at a charge, i.e. M&S Asda Waitrose.  Surely the cost of bags is included in the cost of the produce?  Some of this plastic is not recyclable.  I for one like to see what I am buying, not what is hidden at the bottom of the packaging.

Leave the packaging at the till and take your own bag shopping  previous generations did!  You can do your own advertising instead of theirs.It's nearly five years since this:http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2006/nov/14/supermarkets.ethicalliving

I do take two canvas bags with me, but, they always insist on giving plastic bags.  They should put paper bags at the fruit and veg, at least they can be recycled into more paper bags.What ever happened to the brown carrier bags with the string handles, that we had many eons ago?

Just say No!  :)  I think they'll start charging for them in Wales next month.

Self service supermarkets provide clear plastic bags so that the checkout operator can see what is below the top layer of cheap goods. In my case they also allow me to see the appalling quality of some produce, and I now avoid the superstore nearest to here. I go out of my way to buy from my preferred greengrocer, who does in fact use brown paper bags.
