Gunnersbury Lane

Does anybody know what happened yesterday on Gunnersbury Lane? It was closed between Bollo Lane and Mill Hill Road and there appeared to have been a traffic collision by Avenue Road, as that was also closed. There were some flowers this morning which suggests there may have been a fatality which would be very sad.

I saw the flowers on the way to work this morning and have just read the W3 headlines concerning the fatal motorbike crash. So sad.

'... a serious collision involving a motorcycle at the junction with The Avenue and Gunnersbury Avenue, Acton. 'Doesn't help their appeal for witnesses when they get the roads wrong: it's Avenue Gardens and Gunnersbury Lane...Unless there are two accidents...

Sorry, yes! Doesn't help if the correction is itself incorrect... But it isn't the first time I've heard people refer to Avenue Road as 'The Avenue' - do we have a road called The Avenue in Acton? Great shortage of inspiration when it comes to naming roads round here: Avenue Road/ Gardens/ Crescent...

There's The Avenue in W4, connecting Southfield Rd and South Parade, and whoever put the green sign up on the flats at the junction of Avenue Rd and Langley Drive seemed to think they were in "The Avenue". I expect the thoroughfare was known by that name when it really was an avenue of trees back in 1850 or so, but it's hard to imagine how that name could have survived.
