Sainsbury Local coming to Churchfield Road in March 2012

According to Sainsbury's chairman - who wouldn't say until today - and he ought to know!I hope that is good for the area, for Churchfield Road and for those who "live, work & shop" in and around it.Will Londis be OK? I think they offer such friendliness and responsiveness and the papers and Polish stuff, and are so near the station, that they should be fine. But what do I know?

I do not think it will be good for local shops.... Take Askew Rd with a Tesco Excess, Sainsbury Local, The Co-op and Costcutter.... and now an upmarket deli/butcher..... Small shops cannot compete.

Totally agree IainLondis is the only real competition in Churchfield Road though isn't it?They will suffer for sure though.

Oops - dont thinkit's been announced officially - thought it had.I think Londis will be OK but the other more feeble stores might be in trouble. After all Londis has commuters and papers which differentiate them. And are jolly nice with continuity and civility - none of which in my experience do you find in the big chains.

Is Londis the one opposite Acton Central?  If so there are a couple of others that are fine i.e. not feeble as referred to in an earlier thread,  namely the one half way down Churhfield Rd towards Myrtle Road,  and also the old Spar which is now PM Stores and is a vast improvement and very friendly service in there. I hope they all survive,  I tend to pop into the above mentioned shops infrequently and invariably would use Sainsburys if it arrives in preference to popping to Morrisons when I run out of something.  Hopefully there is room for all to survive!

Yes,Dee - Sainsbury's do deliver,  but not, I think, the smaller versions of Sainsbury's, like those in Ealing and near Ealing Common station. For delivery it's either on line shopping or a visit to one of their large stores, like the Kensal Rise store

How big is the shop going to be?  Many smaller Waitrose shops deliver free locally.  Now that would be a good service.

i don't agree it will the death of Londis - their prices for the most part aren't too awful. They are also convenient. Personally, If I've got to walk all the way up Churchfield road, I'd rather go to Morrisons.As mentioned too, Londis have a loyal client base, and they are always friendly and helpful there.Let's hope it's just healthy competition.Carl

Looking at other Sainsbury's Local store opening times, I think there will be a difference in opening times, with Sainsbury's opening later than Londis but closing at the same time as them. I don't know about Christmas Day though. But it has been known for some SL stores to trial opening on Christmas Day.

As far as I recall, Londis was closed on Christmas day and open on Boxing day. There were shops in the high street open though. Carl

Jen, it just shows that family run establishments not employing a staff on various shifts, etc, can be more flexible in such things.  I remember many years ago, buying a Christmas lunch - Turkey, Christmas Cake, Christmas Pudding, etc, etc. at 10.00 am on Christmas Day!And some people prefer to spend their money in shops that are prepared to do this.

Yep. Londis is definitely closed on Christmas Day, IIRC it is the only day they close. Boxing Day they are open, but they give their newspaper deliverers the day off so newspapers have to be collected from the shop that day.I think their hours are slightly different on either Boxing Day or New Year's Day as well - ISTR they didn't open until around 8am on one of the days over the Christmas period last year.

Dear me I am feeling quite elderly..remember the days when no shops open on Sunday,  bank hols,  over Christmas or Easter..........HOW DID WE MANAGE!

Jen - rather off subject, but I remember when I was a kid the only shops open on Good Friday were those selling Hot Cross buns!  And they closed at lunchtime.  I think I live in a different world now.

Jen - that's a big question!  Yes, in some ways it is better, but in a lot it's worse.  We're probably more materialstic, harder, probably even unable to enjoy the benefits that have arisen since the 1950s.  Now I'll get down from my soap box!

Well I guess that's like everything in life pros and cons!  No point in looking to the past with rose tinted glasses.By the way is it official that Sanisburys are ACTUALLY seeting up shop in Churchfield Rd or just a rumour?  Most of the SL are reasonably big,  bigger than shop space in Churchfield Rd.

They have already put a larger loading bay next to the shop on Alfred Road, presumably delivery truck size, and apparently there is a notice on the window about a change of use.

There's also a notice from Ealing Council saying that Sainsburys plc have applied for an off-license for 61-63 Churchfield Road, and it's out to consult.

Dee, what do you mean by "cheap eastern european beer" Does that mean its OK for cheap french and Belgian beer such as Stella and Kronenberg?I suspect you are having a dig at our Polish friends?I am sure Sainsburys will cater for local demand and stock accordingly.... Iain

Iain, the cans found abandoned in bushes, on the pavement, in flower beds, front gardens, by the entrance to Acton Central Station and various other locations in the Acton Central area are without doubt of Eastern European origin.  Not having a dig at anyone other than those who abandon them without a thought for who is going to pick them up.

We had a meeting with Sainsbury's in which they said they had notified the council that they were applying for 0800 - 2300 licensing seven days a week and that the store opening times would be 0700 - 2300.Just shows there's no popint in negotiating with big business; their actual licence application is for 24 hour opening and alcohol on sale from 0700 - 2300 daily.So they were lying through their teeth. Dunno why they bothered to bring lawyers, managers etc. Maybe to add credibility to an otherwise unconvincing narrative.Anyhow the licensing meeting is on January 18th and anyone who wants to object should turn up.

OK - I take it all back. Sainsbury have now - after the circulation of the substantive papers - produced something that does show shorter hours (only a little but hey!) plus not 24 opening, fair security and a committment to not selling cheap, high alcohol booze.Meeting of licensing committee today - so we will see.

I am just glad I will have a viable option to morrisons which I think, frankly, sucks. The veggies and fruit is usually damaged, if not off. They never have fresh herbs, the meat lasts no longer than a day and I find it expensive. I am now driving to asia or sainsburys in order to avoid walking to the awful morrisons.

Asia is a long way to drive! Don't agree about Morrisons, fruit and veg generally good, fish excellent, meat OK and I've had no problem finding fresh herbs when I need them.

Guess Janet meant ASDA! I agree with you Chris - Morrison's serves me well enough - fruit and veg are better than Safeway used to be, and they have plenty of fresh herbs - either in pots of in little packs. Never had any problem with meat not lasting - perhaps your fridge is at fault Janet? I think Morrison's quality is better than ASDA on many things.

So do I And their bread is excellent as is the fish.Most things are much cheaper than M&S and Waitrose and even than Tesco.But it is a grim experience and there's loads of crime there.I reckon I'll go to Sainsburys for emergency fruit and veg and eggs, and keep with Londis for other bits. Morrisons likely to be the loser in this household.

Are you sure it's morrisons you are going too? As a regular shopper there I don't recognise your description. Their meat is excellent,always UK sourced and has the same keeping properties as any other supermarket or butcher.

I also shop in Morrisons and have always found the bread meat and fish perfectly adequate .
