price of milk along Horn lane!

This is a random posting for anyone who, like me is trying to feed hungry family on diminishing income and rising prices!4 pints of milk yesterday cost £1.18 at Morrisons. £1.64 at Co- op. £1.89 at spar grocery at the garage. There was a diary on Horn lane ( Wales farm diary) in Victorian times, I wonder what the price of milk was then!

Milk is used as a loss-leader by the supermarkets.(They draw you in with a low price for fresh milk in the hope that you will buy other products when you are in there.  Generally it is also placed so that you have to walk right through the store to buy it as well.  That is another marketing ploy.)When you take into account the other things that you have been tempted by while in there and may not need you may not find that the initial price was so cheap because it also cost you...so much more.This is why it is also wise never to go shopping on a hungry stomach!Meal planning (or an attempt at it) and making a list also help so that nothing is wasted.  The Food Waste Bin helps here because when you separate you can see any mistakes you are making/have made with food management and can think how you could improve.I too have been smarting and complaining at how much more ordinary food seems to be costing recently.I get some milk twice a week from the milkman and top up at/for the weekend.  I reckon I save by not having to nip out for some milk.

You can get a 4 pint bottle of milk in the 99p shop in the Oak Centre, it is always well within date, and if you get through a lot of milk in a week it is a real saver!

Don't bother buying semi-skimmed milk at the coop unless you're going to drink it within a couple of days.  It will always go off before the use by date.

My mother used to make up powdered milk when she was making sauces and also surreptitiously add some to the fresh milk to eke it out when it was running low.  It had to be surreptitiously though as if it was on our cereal we were likely to notice.I used to rather like days when we had to have toast for breakfast for a change!Both milk and bread can be frozen if you have freezer.

amazing, fantastic response! Thank you everybody. Believe it or not we get through about 30 pints of milk a week so I truly appreciate the input. I live in a house that was built around  1906 and apparently had a daily maid who came in to help with the cooking and cleaning.......!

The Co-op in Horn Lane seems to charge different prices on different days!!!It was £1.25 the other day then two days later it was £1.15.I only buy from them if desperate, otherwise I buy from Iceland at £1.00.You are paying for a smaller bottle at the Co-op by the waybecause Iceland is selling a 4pint bottle for £1.00.Tesco only has the full cream milk for £1.00 - it is currently £1.18 for semi skimmed milk.

We get milk delivered once a week, sometimes more if we need it. As more of a country lover than a townie, I have always made a point of trying not to buy milk from supermarkets as I have always been led to believe the farmers get more money from the dairies than supermarkets. If I ever do have to buy milk from a shop, I try and find the most local milk I can - although I'm not keen on that Freshway stuff you get in most corner shops around here.

I suspect the price/quality ratio round here is not high - probably price/convenience higher. Garages tend to be dearer as are the convenience stores open long hours.Overall I find Morrisons astonishingly cheap for produce etc compared to anywhere else - eight kiwis for a pound yesterday: that's a lot of vitamin C or whatever for your money.
