Sainsburys Local to be open 7.00 am - 11.00 pm

Absolutely not but there are members who think that 0700 an excessively early start given the local challenge of problem drinking.

I have mixed views on this.I feel that chains like Sainsbury's moving in can erode communities as much as they serve them. Personally I think Londis will survive as their prices are for the most part very fair. There are other newsagents and grocery shops in Churchfield road however that I would expect not to cope so well. Often their stock is lacking to say the least, their presentation can be poor, and their prices often very high.I know from the local police that a huge amount of their resource is spent "managing" the Morrison area (shoplifting, drinkers etc), and I hope this doesn't end up filtering down to Churchfield road once Morrison close for the night. Cheap booze and long opening hours could well create the perfect storm.Carl

I like the fact there will be a cash machine much handier and nicer than traipsing to Acton High Street.Hopefully the multiple convenience stores will survive.

I too like Carl am worried about the possibility of the 'street drinkers' wandering up and down Churchfield Road .......!! Let's hope that the cash machine doesn't turn out to be easy pickings for local robbers !!

the alcohol thing is a red herring surely? you can buy booze at dozens of places round acton at any time of the day or night in my experience hic.Its possibly a trojan horse to mix another metaphor in for peoples real concerns about big supermarkets. We had the same thing where i work in Barnes, the local community were furious and shopkeepers thought it'd send them out of business. It did exactly the opposite, White Hart Lane is now a thriving little hub because so many more people now stop there to pick stuff up from Sainsburys.i say this as a general disliker of big bullying corporates but i think its exactly what Churchfield road needs.

It could be that a price war may break out amongst the shops to sell the cheapest canned beer.  And that will lead to more empty cans on our streets and more inebrated people wandering about.  As you say the more shops doing business can only be a good thing.

Even if Londis prices are fair, they won't be able to compete with Sainsburys, people will shop in Sainsbury's for something Londis doesn't have and while there buy whatever else they may need, which Londis probably sell (ie, if you went to Sainsbury's for a better range of pasta sauces why wouldn't you buy your newspaper/milk/fags, etc while you were there? Would you really go to another shop which sells the same things at maybe a few pence more?  Be honest now ...).With such a booze licence it'll also be bad news for Grapevines although they do have a better selection than most small supermarkets.Let's hope I'm proved wrong by the locals helping small businesses but personally I have to go on price so if Sainsburys is cheaper I will shop there.  I'd love to be able to say I will stick to local shops but I can't afford such a luxury.

Locals tend to be more expensive that the larger supermarkets.  So it will be interesting to see the prices compared to your other little local shop.  They also don't seem to think that they have to follow the Courtauld Commitment and reduce the number of carrier bags they hand out. You will probably have to request that they carry some reusable ones and/or Bags for Life (the ones that you swap for a free new one when it is worn out and the original is recycled) for when you forget to take your own and need one.  If you are lucky they will design the shop well enough for you to put your own bag down for it to be filled.  Three re-fits later ours still isn't.I reckon the signage will be bright enough to show that they are there!

It opens in March 2012I think Londis will be OK - very near the station, lots of regulars, newspaper delivery and lovely bread.The other, less distinctive but similar shops may be in more trouble further down the road.Overall, I think it is quite flattering to Churchfield Road/Acton and could be seen as a harbinger of positive development. And it hasn't stirred lots of opposition - quite the contrary - just a little concern about the length of licensing hours.
