Michael Barrymore crashes through Acton

...and into the kerb and trouble at the junction of the Vale and Dordrecht Road - pix all over London Tonight on Sunday evening.Didn't have him down as an Acton type myself!

Start with negatives i'm afraid: Not very rich, glamorous, stylish. If in public/entertainment/PRy life, rather on the fringes.Urban, edgy, integrated, accepting.Will that do?

But there are a few public/entertainment types who are not on the fringes.And lots of expensive property in Acton; I always think if I could afford such and such a house I would rather pay the same for some where nicer but possibly less rooms. Cannot say I ever thought of Michael Barrymore as glamorous but clearly fallen on hard times - millionaire mansion to a flat in Acton albeit it a terribly nice development!But lets face it folks the majority of people in Acton are not affluent and on the poorer side,  low cost housing with some pockets that are nice.So will anyone else say what the "Acton type" is?And are the posters on this site representative of the "Acton type"  I will put my neck on the line and say probably not.Of course I am terribly defensive should an outsider criticize Acton!!

Wholly agree with you that whatever an Acton Type is, they are probably not on the forum - or not exclusively.But I have no real feel for how many people lurk here - or even post.I'd rather live further in than further out - so this is a fair compromise given that a mansion flat in Montague Square or Marylebone High Street probably isn't on the cards.

Ho hum! Should have married a banker not a musician to attain dream place walking distance from the Wigmore Hall.It will have to be edgy Acton for forseeable future!Keith - not quite safe, maybe some attitude, interesting, not wholly predictable and maybe a little bit radical. Will that do for edgy?

It's likely to remain "edgy" Acton for a long as people keep talking it down.I'v always said, there is nowhere in London I'd rather live than Acton - if there were, I'd live there - simples!Carl

I don't think what is or is not said about Acton will change what it is,  if that were the case I would talk endlessly about how fabulous Acton High Street is in the hope it may get better.In any event edgy does not equate with bad,  many people like edgy and see it as positive.  Hoxton is edgy not my cup of tea but positivley thriving at the moment.  Shepherds Bush too might be seen as edgy.  Not everyone wants quiet,  comfortable,  safe hum drum.

I agree to a point Jen, but I do think that there is a negative element to a lot of the feedback on Acton. I've lived in Acton for 42 years and find it friendly, colourful, interesting, vibrant and exciting. We have great transport links, nice parks and open spaces and some good pubs and food. Sure Chiswick is more trendy, but I know from friends that live ther, that it's often not friendly and they don't enjoy quite the same sense of community that we do in Acton.Let's all look at the positives that Acton gives us and be pleased we're a part of it.Carl

My point is that Acton is much like many other places in that it has its quiet,safe areas and it's not so desirable spots.Edgy is like other vague descriptions that mean different things to different people.Like the word vibrant when used to describe an area.I got chatting to an estate agent some years ago and she said that the word vibrant is one she would avoid as it is code for 'There is plenty of noise when you are trying to sleep and there is a good chance that you will get mugged late at night'.

Vibrant = mugged ha ha that made me laugh.What made me laugh even more regarding estate agents is this week seeing an ad for a property in Grove Road W3 being described as in "Poets Corner" and "near Acton Central Tube"!!

Donkey's years ago I had a look around a flat in Petersfield Rd.I think it was called and was given the 'Chiswick borders'speil by the estate agent.We walked into what could only be described as a compact broom cupboard and he said'This is the second bedroom'.My reply,which did not go down well with wifey was 'And this mud on my shoe is the garden I suppose?'
