Acton Town Centre Regeneration Fund-Public Art

A.P.P.L.E have been approached to get involved with the public arts section of the project to improve Acton's public spaces. The time frame for this project is very tight, march 2012. An arts consultancy, the artist, and a concept are already in place. There are 2 public consultations on Thursday 8th at the Oak Tree Church ( Where Help the Aged were) and at the Christmas Fair , The Mount on Sat 10th. A.P.P.L.E would like to be involved but would like some idea about what people think of the proposal. Can people go and have a look and make some comments. Either on this site, my email or to the consultants. Thanks

The worry is that the public art will be imposed on us, as if we are an uncultured society and Ealing Council is coming to 'civilise' us. Acton has a vibrant artistic community - not least APPLE itself, whose young people do amazingly classy artworks in all sorts of media. It would simply be wrong for public art in Acton to be 'given' to us rather than our artists being given the opportunity to contribute to it. The timescale may be really tight, but that should concentrate minds rather than close them off to a wider community participation.

Nancy, who chose the consultancy, the artist and decided on the concept?  Presumably they are being paid?  What's the budget?

Yes I have had some meaningful contact with the arts team. They are all in place. I don't know who chose them , how they were chosen or how much the budget is. The concept has changed quite a bit from the presentation made at CCA's AGM. It feel very vague at the moment. I am looking for some feedback from people about the ideas they are putting forward so I and my team can make a decision about how to get involved. I don't want to be negative as this is a great opportunity but it need some real community involvement not just a paper excercise. Please go and question the team at the Christmas Fair.
