Scary callers at the door !

On Friday night we had a knock in the door around 745pm. It was a guy collecting for some kind of unemployment group or alike.My 70 year mother in law nervously explained we were out and to come back another time. His response was to verbally abuse her with horrible language in an extremely aggressive manner. She was scared by this. Don't mind genuine appeals on the door but this sounds wrong and she felt threatened. Luckily she didn't open both doors. She thinks he would have become forceful. Watch out people and always try to get the name of the appeal. If we had got it I would have complained to them and the police.Anyone else had this experience?

This sounds horrible for your mother in law.Have you spoken to the SNT/Police and given a description?

Have recently had a spate of chuggers at the door, supporting charities that are NOT based in the UK, and, usually with foreign accents.  There is always a catch, sign a direct debit. A good response to these people is...Put it in writing and send it to me (but do give a phoney name.)  If a hacker couldn't get my details what chance do they stand.What annoys me is these people who knock at the door selling dusters etc.  Surely this is illegal.

Yep that's what it was although no dusters could be seen apparently!

Nicola, why does it "annoy you" that people are trying to improve their situation through honest hard work?While I agree that there is no place for rudeness and aggression, the guys that occasionally call to my door selling household products are invariably polite and respectful Please keep in mind that for these guys, this is an important first step on the ladder to employment.Carl

Have a spy viewer fitted to your front door.  If you do not recognise or are expecting a caller, ignore them.  It is most unwise to open your front door to anyone you do not recognise, especially after dark.In the Goldsmith Avenue area we have a constant stream of these people knocking on our door.Can I suggest that 'salesmen/women' would get a better response - if they are in fact 'on their first step on the ladder to employment', if they did not knock on our doors in the dead of night, but stand outside Morrisons during daylight.

These people are just doing their job, but they shouldn't be knocking on doors after dark. I sugest, do not open the door to anyone that you don't recognise, especially if you are on your own at the time.

The scenario could be open the door, caller barges in, knocks you over and 'surprise' 'surprise' you have been robbed or worse.Get a strong chain fitted if you must open the door.The local Community Police are able to help with advice on such matters.  And sometimes they give away freebies.
