I used to know a lady who owned a couple of laundrys in Berrymede road Acton Green, she used to mention there were crowds that would turn up from all over the area to watch bare knuckle fights in the laundry back in the 50's at number 5 at the rear of the laundry. In South Acton from what my mother inlaw has told me who grew up on the estate back in the 40's there were quite a few petty criminals rampant at the time well known familys but they looked after there neigbours, doors were left open kides played out on the streets , everyone new everyoneif anything happened to one of the children you would know what would happen next, she told me when a child got hit with a spade by an elder boy the father went round the house to sort him out the older boy would not come out so the father burst his way in and chopped the stairs down no harm harm was done to the elder boy though just a swift ticking off.
