Acton in Old Postcards

Tonight 7.30, St Mary's Church Hall. An Acton History Group illustrated talk by Paul Lang, showing Acton and Ealing in old postcards.All welcome £2 for non-members, free for members. Refreshments available.

Anthony, as you are a member of AHG, there will no doubt be a write up in the next Acton Historian in May. There is a possibility that a future meeting could be show more old postcards of Acton - but I can't guarantee it!

thanks Amanda, i'll look out for it next time. Ive been trawling the net for pics of my street ( bollo bridge rd) without success -apart from of All saints Church. Such a shame that went btw- and not even a plaque to remember it by! ah well.

Antony, I am looking for old photos and perhaps the original lot plans for my street (Berrymead gardens). I would love to find an old photo or plan of my house. Did you come across any websites that have these sorts of details? Thanks in advance. !

hi Janet, unfortunately not. ive bought a couple of old maps but the detail is poor and ive found a few photos but Actons residential streets dont seem to be well photographed. I found one of Brounker Road and as i mentioned 2 or 3 of the church. Its quite frustrating as London has a pictoral history  unsurpassed i should think. Let me know if you turn anything up. i keep meaning to goto Ealing library as they have some historical records there.

This Berrymead Gardens 1893 Map should be of interest!It's an extract from the old Ordnance Survey Map of area by Alan Godfrey ISBN 0- 85054 319 3

You can try looking at old street directories, which list the people living there in the 1890s to abt 1911. http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/index.asp - choose Middlesex as the location and then you will see a list of old directories that you can browse. The streets are listed alphabetically - and include Acton, Ealing and Hanwell.

The road junction looks so much wider then! It hasn't really changed that much. Not sure what date the postcard is but in 1907 the bakers was Banham's (now solicitors), the next shop on Churchfield Rd was Mrs King, Tobacconist, and then Charles Ryan, Dairy (what is now Sham's chip shop) You can just see the edge of Hooper's Greengrocers - I assume that is why the little mews was, and still is, called Hooper's Mews.

It was in Kendal Avenue where the old BBC outside broadcasting units were. All gone now of course and rebuilt on.

The Ruffy-Baumann school of flying was based at Acton Aerodrome. It trained pilots for WW1, and was 'remembered' when the Park Royal Leisure Park was built - there was a Brewer's Fayre pub, called The Ruffy-Baumann on the site. It is now the Dragon King Chinese Buffet.

It looks like the one on the Acton History website from Brooklands Museum - 933 Napier Railton (powered by a Lion aero engine).
