Does anybody know why most of the trees planted outside Morrison's a few years ago, (at great expense to the tax-payer) have been crudely chopped down to 4 foot stumps?

Yup - and there are other threads discussing it.The trees were planted with the wrong sort of irrigation - can't recall if it was too little or too much. Most of them have been dying for some time. The whole paving of the mount - remember they brought stone from China or something daft - plus the creation of Lenin's tomb - was largely unsupported by the commuity at the time - and as for the abomination that is the green box whcih stores market stuff - words fail me.Now there is a new plan to replant the trees - which is why I suspect the remaining ones have come down recently. There is a council commitment to ensure these have the right sort of irrigation. And the beastly box is supposed to go too. It's funded from a grant made by Boris to outer London streetscapes I think. Anyhow it has to be spent this financial year - hence the speed.
