Street litter picking

Horn Lane has been cleaned but none of the side roads on the west side have been touched. Has anyone seen their streets being cleaned since Friday a week ago?

Nope.But I did see a street sweeper outside Lonodis in Churchfield Road yesterday. He wasn't sweeping or picking for that matter. But he was there.

Saw an Enterprise litter picker today lunchtime in Messaline Avenue carefully picking litter out of a front garden crammed with junk piled outside from a house clearance.  None of what he picked up was on the pavement or road but he carefully pulled bits out of the front garden to load into his bag.  Only watched for a couple of minutes as due elsewhere.

Are they employed to litter pick the roads or the gardens?  Strange behaviour!

A friend just told me this evening that residents in Germany are fined by their local council if they don't clean the pavement in front of their property! They are also held responsible to keep their front gardens clean and tidy!Perhaps we could learn something from other countries when it comes to keeping the place clean and tidy?Why is it that the council cannot do anything if residents refuse a request to clear up their own mess?

And in Switzerland you can be fined for not having geraniums of the correct red shade in your window-boxes.Lets go Germanic.

In Germany you have to clear the snow from the front of your property, or else.Also on the spot fines.

I have noticed when places such as Switzerland are shown on TV the streets always look clean and tidy. Visitors to London for the Olympics will surely be in for a shock when they see the state of some of our streets, and the graffiti when travelling by train!Oh dear!

Grafitti?Have you been to Barcelona or Lisbon?London is practically grafitti free by comparison - I was really shocked at Lisbon's grafitti - yet there's hardly any round here. Of course there's lots around railways (but have you noticed how "our" footbridge gets re-cleaned every fortnight or so?) but compared to many places - including parts of Germany but not, OK, Switzerland, we are not too bad.

Gosh Sara, I had no idea, not having been to Europe for many a year.The bridge in Acton High Street near The Vale had graffiti last time I looked. How on earth do they manage to get up there?
