Up Periscope!

Looks very nice and will be a great improvement on what is there now.

Do you specifically approve of the periscope - as opposed to the overall development, and if so, why.Or is the periscope a price you would be willing to pay to get the rest of it?

Would it be possible to ask Prince Charles if he could come to Acton and, talk to the trees?  They may stand a chance of survival!As for the periscope/carbuncle, what a nasty place to install those retched CCTV cameras, just to spy on us.  HRC. A right to privacy?

Nicola, I guess the architect responsible for designing the awful periscope/carbuncle would not wish to live nearby, if he did I am sure the outcome would be different!

In response to Sara's question, I think the whole development appears to be an improvement on what is there now, and as good as it likely to be realistic to expect.The periscope is the best bit of the scheme and in my view will be a great addition to Acton's dreary High Street and environs.

I hate the proposed periscope, 10 storeys high and resembling the awful modern British Library, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to really impriove central Acton and sorry but the periscope looks like it has just been bolted on to the main development, if we must have a "statement" building we can surely do better!

What I dont like about it - apart from its scale and height is that it makes Derwentwater Road look scrutinised  - as if their every move is watched. How could residents bear it?

Strangely enough I don't mind that one in Bangalore ... at least it's consistent in colour.The periscope just looks wrong.  It's a different height to the rest of the block, a different style and a different colour.  Maybe if they put the "lung" design down the side of the tower it might improve it but even so it's a bit too high.

Those who came up with this design need to explain themselves extremely quickly via a public meeting else someone will expose them as being the most awful architects presently practising in the UK.

We have the upstairs room for a meeting with the developers, the lead architect and the PR people on 22 May @ 1930.All welcome.It would be good if a lot of people came so if anyone is willing to distribute leaflets to their neighbours/non-forum readers,, I have created some and will send them to you for printing and distribution if you PM me.

Why are details of meetings being posted here rather than on the Oaks Redevelopment thread.  Whoever is organising the meeting may get a better turn out of they post the meeting details there.

The Oaks Shopping Centre Redevelopment 2012A new planning application has been submitted QUIETLY for the Oaks on July 27th 2012.  There is still time to act and object though........ It would appear from the article below  that the 'Periscope' design has been done away with but the 11 storeys remain exactly where they were, on Churchfield Road towering over it, and Derwentwater Road.http://www.architectsjournal.co.uk/news/daily-news/stock-woolstencroft-scales-down-shopping-centre-plan-to-appease-residents/8634150.article The article shows computer generated images of the design now submitted to planning.  One of the images shows the top of the building entirely obscured by trees. Amendment to earlier thread - it may be that the planning application submitted on 27th July DOES include 'The Periscope'.  The problem is there is no visibility whatsoever and the controversial plans seem to have been submitted without anyone noticing.  Plans are unavailable on Ealing's website, the architects computer generated images obscure the top of the building with trees. Thanks Fred.  How anyone could consider that this 'modern' strcuture will last the test of time I know not.  This is just a way of making money quickly.  We have too many people already in Acton, we do not want more.There is plenty of land upon which to build this in North Acton, in fact on the 266 bus route north there is a derelict office block on the left hand side just before Willesden Junction, upon which this development would fit perfectly.
