Sainsbury's Local, Churchfield Road opens 11th May

Just had a leaflet through the door for the new Sainsbury's local with an opening date of 11th May. They seem to have progressed with it quite quickly.

I drove past yesterday and thought I saw people going in.  It looked pretty much open then.  Looks smart, although feel sorry for the Costcutter more or less directly opposite.

The planning application outside the grotty Greek restaurant in Gunnersbury Lane seems to suggest that a Sainsburys Local is due to open there.

I walked past it today, and it is not open yet. I got a leaflet through the letterbox giving £2 off a min £6 spend from it's opening on 11 May, to 25 May.

Sainsbury's have also, according to a notice posted there, bought the old Broadway Greek restaurant's premises on Gunnersbury Parade (by Acton Town tube).

Dee, only original coupons will be accepted - it is not something you can just print off. I imagine they were posted through all letterboxes in the area - we certainly had them in Highlands Ave. I guess those who ask for 'no junk mail' probably will miss out.

I got one! You would think I was ridiculous if I said how much I am looking forward to using it. I wonder if there will be a queue to get in. Or people getting squashed in the crush to get in like at IKEA...

Hi I've also heard they are opening in the new West Central development on the corner of Gunnersbury Lane and Uxbridge Rd. Anyone else heard such news?

Well they have got off to a bad start by not circulating their money off coupon to those living nearest to the store.  I'm glad the person running this scheme does not work for my business!

I guess those living near the store will give it a try anyway.  Makes sense to encourage those living further away with money off coupons.  Where's mine?  :o(

And mine?Did go anyhow - it's heaving with staff inside and traffic wardens outside.Good range though - they have squeezed a lot in and the fresh fruti/veggie part (which is what I think I will mostly use) isnt bad though could be a bit bigger. Couldn't see sweetcorn for example and had to be directed to grapes and spinach.A usually not very reliable source tells me the ghastly bedsits above are being rented by the council at £200 per week each for use as housing for released prisoners. Surely this can't be true!

Typical Acton - you get an aspirational Sainsbury's Local as a package with a houseful of taxpayer-funded ex-cons. Marvellous.Can also confirm that a Sainsbury's Local is opening at the far end of the parade of shops by Acton Town tube on the site of the Acropolis Greek restaurant. The licence applications and plans have been submitted. No mention of plans for recovering drug-addicts to be living over the shop, so far...

I never got a leaflet, I'm about 500 yards from the store, anyway regarding the flats above and in general I might rent my flat out during the Olympics for £5000 a week and sleep in the park.At least it's got a Cash point ATM that doesn't charge you anything to use it

Oh come on! As John says free cash machine. Plus it looks well-stocked. It could be a real asset. I just hope it doesnt undermine Londis, though I think being so close to the station and with the newspaper business and the personal touch, it should be OK.

I visited it last night, I won't be in a hurry to go back, I found most of the prices very high for the same stuff I can get in Londis* for cheaper or the same price, also more choice in Londis and friendlier staff.I felt I was being 'followed' by one of the staff with a floor cleaning machine, it really wouldn't surprise me if they (Sainsbury's) went out of business in Acton unless they change their range and prices which they probably won't as they're a massive business, and can afford to lose money as they build up a customer base. * and other local shops

I think the new local Sainsburys is great. It's clean, smart and they have a very good range. Several things we can't get in Churchfield Road and would otherwise need to brave the hoardes in the supermarket at the Mount. I like the convenience and the free cashpoint will be handy.

Although it opens early on a Sunday, the delivery of fresh stuff isnt till around ten apparently. So at 0930 this morning almost no fresh fruit and veg and rather bemused and apologetic staff: it went from about 15 staff on Friday to two sleepy ones on Sunday with amazing speed.

We find them good neighbours and, so far, we have experienced a slight increase in footfall.  The street seems more alive with new faces which can't be bad.  True, they sell all sorts..  flowers, meats, wines but in a different way to us lovely sole traders.  We have had so many customers comment that they are keen to support local businesses as well as enjoying the convenience of the new Sainsbury's local.  Sue @ Heart & Soul

Keeping pavement tidy, although their bin outside had disappeared on Friday.  The delivery staff and the company who fill up the cash point are eager to accommodate our little van for our loading and generally the odd friendly wave from their staff when walking past.  They are happy to investigate stocking new lines too.  Yeehar :-)

Sent hubby out to buy loaves at 0830 this morning - and when I came to make sandwiches in the early afternoon, both were stale - but I didn't have time to do anything about it.i think they need to sort out Sunday deliveries - i wouldn't ecxpect bread bought at Morrisons to be stale when I get it home - and he only went to Sainsbury's cos it opens three hours earlier than Morrisons on a Sunday.Will have to factor in the wait next time.

Melanie - most supermarkets offer fresh bread and pastries on a Sunday and if they are stale, they should be removed from the shelves.

I agree Maria. Or they should sell them at a discounted price. I bought a stale loaf of bread from Sainsbury's Local last Tuesday. It is definitely worth checking the sell-by dates as when I bought one later in the week, I found one at the back of the shelf which had a 3-days-more-recent sell-by date than the others. I reckon if the date on the loaf is the same as the date you buy it, then it's stale.I also couldn't help noticing a fly sitting on one of the croissants which are kept in the open. At least at Londis they have plastic covers over all the pastries.I hate complaining, because this is such a welcome addition to Churchfield Road. If this was a small business I would talk to the shop staff first, but this is Sainsbury's. I don't really mind if my bread isn't squidgy fresh if I'm buying it to freeze and toast, but I do mind paying full price for it from a national supermarket chain. And I will talk to the shop staff when I next go in.

Maria - if baking my own was ever feasible, it certainly wasnt yesterday and I expect better of a national chain.Both loaves were within best before date - just - but were definitely stale - doesnt happen at Morrisons and shouldn't at Sainsbury's.It's only "convenient" as a store if it provides similar quality as other outlets surely.I would have been better off (I know now) to have bought the bread at Morrissons on Saturday along with other tea party ingredients.Live and learn!

Hi Sara - I wouldn't dream of suggesting you bake your own - I think it was Melanie.  It might be a good idea to advise the manager of your disappointment so that he can tell his staff to ensure that stock is rotated - perhaps old stuff can be discounted as in their main stores.

Well I popped in there again on the way home from work just to pick up 3 things (avoid the crowds at Morrisons) and I think it is a welcome addition to Churchfield Rd.  It is clean,  has items that are not in the other local shops,  and was quiet so quick.  All shops run low on some items until restocked.  Morrisons have often been out of fruit and veg by the time I get there on the way home.  I only ever use Morrisons for bits and pieces I run out of and would prefer Sainsburys as it's a more pleasant experience.

I think my new routine - until we get a something wonderful at the Oaks - will be Morrisons for "proper" shop including veg and fish.La Viande for sausages and other meatSainsbury for fill in veggiesLondis for all other top-ups. Interestingly I had to get nuts and things for a meeting yestarday and Londis was quite a bit cheaper than Sainsbury's for cashew nute etc - which I did not expect.They say their trade is down a little but not markedly so.

I went there when it recently opened, what a let down! Store is tiny, doesn't stock anything of any need really that you can't buy in Londi's, store detective is very annoying constantly following the wrong people & teh staff are trying too much to be nice which is false!they have obviously been told to do this! I will only use the cashpoint if I feel it is safe to do so ,probably become part of the eastern european crime chain soon! Londis gets my business still as does Morrisons which is worth walking up further for.Sainsburys is about as loveable as Jamie Oliver!!

I popped down for some teabags and another bottle of olive oil. Perfectly good service, but I did notice the long shelf of ready meals and another of booze so I guess their demographic might not fit many of the people posting here. Nice to have a choice though.I don't shop much in Morrisons myself as I cannot bring myself to buy anything there that isn't pre wrapped. A little disagreement with an assistant who had a streaming cold and would insist on handling my freshly baked loaf was the final straw.She wiped her nose with the back of her hand as I grabbed the loaf back. The less than fresh fish had previously given me pause. The shop is so crowded that I do realise mine is a minority view but still......
