echo on landline phone

Do other people suffer echo on their landline phones?I often have to hang up an re-dial the number.  Sometimes the echo is there, sometimes it is not...It is driving me around the bend ... the bend

It can happen with poorly designed equipment. Old analogue phones used a clever hybrid transformer which prevented the echo, modern phones should also use echo cancellation but it costs money. Cheap phone-computer converter cards as used for Skype could also be culprits, although I have also heard a long delayed echo while using a mobile phone.

I would expect Siemens cordless phones to be up to spec.  Also have had echo on mobile calling a landline!!!
