A few seconds using google to search for "genealogy" found familysearch.org but beware, the non-free services offer very long term membership so I assume that any search could take a very long time.My father tried to search before the internet made it slightly easier, and discovered that birth registrations were often delayed by about a year because most chidren died during that year so were not recorded, while those that did survive were often listed with incorrect details. There were frequent examples of incorrect spelling and other details because so few people could read and write, and the registrar could only guess what was correct.
