Petrol station at Asda now open. Unleaded 1.28 and a bit, beats BP Horn Lane

Nice to see a new petrol station open up instead of an existing one converted into flats.  Why have we lost so many petrol stations this way over the years?

Lack of profit. One at North Acton will be closing soon because traffic has been directed away from the filling station, proportional costs have risen, causing the fuel price to rise, so fewer people go there. There are plans to create an absolutely HUGE open space in its place, then build even more high rise flats alongside. The only reason the Asda one is opening is to compete with Alperton Sainsbury and Perivale Tesco, which are already entrenched in battle.

I thought the new Asda petrol station was expensive.  Comparing it to the BP in Horn Lane is like comparing Armani to Gucci, two very overpriced brands. The man in BP Horn Lane told me, when I commented they were the most expensive, that the cheapest in the area was the Tesco on Uxbridge Road!

For ages the cheapest was Sainsburies Alperton, and the Esso next door, at 1.29. But both have gone up to 1.30 or thereabouts. Asda at 1.28 is by far the cheapest, assuming it hasn't gone up since I last went on Weds. Other than Asda and Sainsburies, the Shell on the A40, the garage at Chiswick roundabout, and possibly the Murco garage by Acton Green, or the Esso near the North Circular Park Royal junction (next to the Brent recyling centre!) tend to have okay prices. Basically anywhere other than BP Horn Lane.

Why aren't petrol stations making a profit when the population is increasing, and with it the housing density and the number of cars on the road, and hence (one would expect) the demand for petrol?  It's getting to be a pain now, having to drive further and queue for longer to buy petrol.  Soon you won't be able to do anything in this country but live because increasingly shops, offices and petrol stations are being converted to housing.

The world is running out of fossil fuels, and those resources that are left are increasingly expensive to collect. Add a very large percentage tax, which will further reduce the amount that the average person uses, and competition soon reduces the number of petrol stations able to survive. People now avoid driving long distances, and try harder to combine short journeys.

The sign outside said diesel 133.7, unleaded 128.7, but I have not been in and do not know which fuels they stock (delivered by an ASDA tanker).

I know all petrol is more expensive these days, but how can Sarah consider ASDA at 128.7 a litre expensive when I have seen many other petrol shops at 133.9 a litre? We have noticed on our trips 'up North' that petrol is generally a few pence cheaper up there.

Morrisons petrol tends to be cheaper (I've used up North and in Kent) but we don't have one locally.

I think there is a Morrison's garage in Kingsbury but it is daft to drive there and back to save 2p a litre.

There are huge differences in both petrol and diesel prices in the area. Before filling up my car which takes 80 litres to fill an empty tank, I always go to the petrol price comparison site:-http://www.petrolprices.com/I have just done a quick check and within a 5 mile radius of my home the cheapest unleaded is 130.9 pence per litre and the most expensive 139.1p/l. Diesel is 135.9 p/l and 143.9 p/l.

Asda Park Royal isn't included on this site yet. When I get the email updates from petrolprices.com it defaults to 2 mile radius for London postcodes, and Sainsburies Alperton is slightly outside this. You can set up the email updates for up to 3 different postcodes, which is useful if you work or make family visits outside London.If you sign up to the email updates check your spam folder. (I apparently blocked emails from them and they were a bit short with me when I contacted them about signing up again!)

As the previous writer commented, it is worth signing up to PetrolPrices.com. You can then set your preferences of post code, petrol or diesel and look at greater radii than the default.Not all petrol stations are logged on the site but it gives a good indication as to the lowest pricing available.

The ASDA fuel price sign at the roadside has been out for ages, and there is never a queue, so I walked round to the pumps to see the current prices.Unleaded 135.7 pence per litreDiesel  139.7 pence per litreCard only, "24 hours".
