Proud to be British

Went last evening to see the Athletics at the Paralympics what an atsmophere in the Olympic Stadium. The crown cheared on all the winners no matter what Country they came from.It's a real shame that this good feeling around will most probable disappear after everying is done and dusted and folk stop talking to each other on the tube.

I was lucky enough to be in the velodrome last Thursday: I've never spoken to so many friendly strangers before in my life! The people sitting next to me, folk sharing a picnic table at lunchtime, someone leaning on the railings looking at the same view...I shall be at the main stadium tomorrow, and look forward to more of the same!(Sadly, I doubt the Olympic/Paralympic effect will last into a dank November...)

I know this didn't happen in Acton but it did happen in Northala Fields, in the same borough.  I was on top of the hill when a young Asian man asked me to take his photo.  I duly obliged.  He went beyond thanking me by shaking my hand.  Now that's what I call civility.  Personally I find that the borough's open spaces, particularly Northala Fields, can get strangers talking and socialising, a great asset in an inevitably somewhat impersonal city like London.

That was nice of him.Is the fact that he is Asian important and would you said as much if he had been English?

And he could easily have looked "Asian" and been "English" as wellUnless you just mean "white"

Actually I would have said the same regardless of what his ethnc background appeared to me at the time.  As I said, London is an impersonal city, so anything and anyone who takes the edge off that deserves praise.  But this time, no apologies are made for my mentioning what appeared to me to be this particular man's ethnic background, given the comments that one reads from time to time about London's (not specifically Acton's or Ealing's) ethnic communities not mixing and not speaking English.  There is so rarely any counterbalancing contrary evidence presented.  And the advice being given here to run away tells me precisely why London is such an impersonal city.  That needs to change.
