What's that thing in Churchfield Road?

Hardly ever drive along but the weather was so foul today that I did - and there was this pillar thing on the left hand side - I think near the Rocket. It looked as if had a map on it but I was driving and it was dark and wet so I couldn't really tell.What is it?

There was another one in the high street.  They do have small maps on them and arrows to different areas.  Not sure why they are necessary.

To be fair - the Acton graffiti monsters have been largely inoperative for ages. Certainly along Churchfield Road.Even the tempting white walls remain white.

Probably cheaper than road name signs that everyone including motorists can see at every junction. Unfortunately sometimes it is difficult to distinguish between a private entrance, a new road, and a named road on the map, so counting junctions before you need to turn does not always work.

I haven't seen the signs, but ask the question, who is paying for their production, installation, and maintenance?With Forum money?

I like it and it serves as a useful map for anyone wanting to get to Acton Town or the high street (!) from Acton Central.It gets pretty tiresome when people complain about absolutely any attempt to improve the area.

Dear N.Roberts:  just for information, I do not complain about everything I was just asking a pertinent question. It is important that when any kind of street furniture is installed, that adequate monies are set aside by the Council for  maintenance, else the street furniture will deteriorate and end up looking tatty and need replacement at Council Tax Payers expense.  Make sense?For information:  Inside Acton Central Station there is a large location map of the area.  So presumably this 'new' location map is a repetition of information already available.

Dee, I wasn't referring to you at all, but to answer your question, the email address given in another post suggests these may be funded by TfL Streets.I still think these are a good idea and contrary to some other suggestions, it hasn't yet been vandalised.

I too think they are most helpful, especially the ones in the Barbican area, where I always get lost.  My concern is only that they are kept in good order so that they can continue to be of use to everyone - those who have responsibility for them must put aside maintenance monies in order to do this.  I shall be chasing TfL up should they be vandalised........

Actually looked at it today and the map and index both look useful.I wonder why it's not nearer to the station - people turning right and going through the park or along East Churchfield - won't see it at all.
