Abu Qatada wins appeal against deportation
Abu Qatada has won his latest appeal against deportation to Jordan in a blow to Home Secretary Theresa May. The Special Immigration Appeals Commission (Siac) upheld the radical cleric's appeal after his lawyers claimed he would not get a fair trial. Mrs May is due to make a statement in the Commons about the decision later this afternoon. Qatada, once described by a judge as Osama bin Laden's right-hand man in Europe, was first allowed to stay in Britain in 1994. But the Government wants to deport him to the Middle East country, where he was convicted of terror charges in his absence. The latest ruling is despite the Home Secretary securing assurances from Jordan that no evidence gained through torture would be used against him.
