Bronze 'Acton' lettering on railway bridge

Thought it would be nice to post about something a bit more cheerful than rubbishy streets, PM10 particles and Abu Qatada. Has anyone else noticed these rather glamorous letters which seem to have appeared over the weekend?

Clare,The lettering is great.  It is part of the current Acton town centre improvements along with the oak tree mural.  This project is funded by the Mayor's Outer London Fund so you can thank Boris and London council tax payers for the money, council officers for bidding for and winning the money and Actonians for coming up with the ideas.  The pots haven't gone down well but the oak tree mural is great as is the lettering.  Replacing the trees on the Mount will be good too if they survive this time around.

We spotted it on Sunday. It looks good - as Phil says, better than the pots, which most people do not notice.

I have yet to spot a pot - not that I've been looking.But I do miss the hanging baskets: the summer ones haven't been replaced with winter planting this year - more budget cuts?

I quite like it too - though the letters are quite far apart.the Xmas lights are due to go up any day now - if that's any consolation for unplanted baskets.

I like the Churchfield Road ones. Simple and effective.The others are getting tired - but who could justify spending money on replacements in the current climate?

agree the 'Acton' lettering looks nice on the bridge – wasn't it supposed to be uplit at night or have I imagined that?

Couldn't agree more. The bridge lights look great - I nearly fell off my bike last night when seeing them for the first time!And again I agree, the Churchfield Road lights are lovely too. Simple, effective, understated.Very Acton...

These are lovely -- the best thing I'd seen in Acton for ages.  I went past them last night and cursed my broken camera, which meant I couldn't take a photo of them.  This morning at 7am, standing at the bus stop I noticed....someone's already nicked the "A".  Climbed right up, ripped it off, lights and all.  Very, very upsetting to see this, as I'd been raving about it to my family as a sight to see (really).Sometimes, Acton is wasted on Actonites.

Bunch of bastards!! The A was sadly propped up against the wall near the bridge as I walked to work :( As I said to my husband only last night, it wouldn't last for long, although I wasn't expecting a matter of days!! Makes me very angry.

Who do we have to lobby to improve the security on the bridge so that this can't happen again? This is extremely depressing. Can it please be put back asap?

Clare, this requires liaison with the Bridge owners, the railway company and the Council....Then someone has to come up with the money to carry out the works.  A much too difficult thing for anyone to take on!!!    Not my baby I hear everyone saying.....Something for Action Acton perhaps?  Or the fund held by the Acton Forum for such works?

Hmmm... I also wondered whether it had been removed 'officially' rather than vandalised. Maybe something wrong with the electrics, or failed bulb perhaps, that meant it had to be taken down, repaired and then replaced. Unless the letters can be easily reached (ie, reached and unscrewed/unbolted and generally manhandled) from the bridge, I would have thought you'd need mobile scaffolding or a cherry-picker to remove the letters. Not something every hoodlum carries around in their back pocket.And if you DO just happen to have such useful gizmos around your person, and risk life and limb to carry out such an act of vandalism with High Street traffic rushing around your nether regions, wouldn't you take it home with you rather than leave it propped up on the pavement?But then what do I know...
