Oaks Planning Development Under Review

A huge change in approach is what is required to solve the problems of local opposition to redevelopment proposals for the so-called 'Oaks' site. Change that fundamentally challenges the very function and aesthetic of the site in relation to the future of Acton Central’s prosperity and attractiveness. The present proposals are merely seen as a block of flats with integral parking, and the need for far greater imagination is needed to establish a vibrant and socially effective centre where commerce and community coexist in reasonable harmony. We all understand that profit is an all-important feature of a developer’s needs, but not at the expense of environment and communities. There are three crucial factors that will determine the success of this (so-called) regeneration scheme and these are: flexible retail, small to medium businesses, residential and cultural facilities. Without the effective inclusion of all four of these factors, agreement cannot be fully reached with the local community. With this in mind we at RETHINK would like to suggest a few alternatives which may create a positive and successful conclusion to this planning process. Redefining the use of the space available will bring new and exciting vitality to the centre of Acton and will, in turn, regenerate and improve the locale. We also suggest that including us in the design process will be of considerable advantage to the architect, developer and local planners, as opposition would be greatly reduced if agreement can be more easily reached. one of the alternative can be seen at: http://www.theoaksalternative.co.uk
