Sichuan

Does anybody know if this is still open?  I went by there for a takeaway last week and it was still very much closed, although without the notice in the window that had been there.  A pity, 'cos I had a craving for their deep-fried shredded beef and chilli sauce.  I tried North China instead, and wasn't that impressed (found it a bit flabby and lacking bite).  I'm hoping that it doesn't disappear!

Hey Adam, I feel your pain. There used to be a chinese a couple of doors along from where Euphoria nightclub is that did the best Deep Fried chilli Beef on the planet but sadly it went many years ago. I do know of a superb Chinese that does an almost perfect one, but sadly it's in Yorkshire so I don't often get to go there, but everytime i'm that way I pop in for that dish.If you find anyhwere that does it well (i.e. not too dry and not too greasy) please do let me know.Cheers, Carl

I really rather like the North China. Only eaten their twice, but it's a lovely family run place that's been there for ages. Food very very good in my opinion.

I love North China and have never found it flabby etc - unless as a takeaway which kills most Chinese food. Had hot and sour soup there a couple of weeks ago which practically took my sinuses off - strongest in twenty odd years of eating there. Never had a poor meal and love Laurence and his team

Yes, it was a take-away, but my dishes from Sichuan were all take-away, as well, and had a certain piquancy that I missed from North China's version.

Sichuen cooking is supposed to be at the spicier end isn't it? I dont think North China are (mostly) trying for that

Yes -- I spent some formative years in New York City, and thrived on the taste and textures of Szechuan chinese as it was there and then.  Imagine my disappointment when I returned to the UK in 1983 to find most Chinese takeways presenting something grey and gloopy in a tin foil box.  The Sichuan came closest, for me (for years it seemed the UK idea of szechuan was the grey gloopy stuff with a dash of Tabasco)so I'd be very disappointed if it's gone.  An interesting place is Tian Fu, just off Shepherd's Bush Green.  I've only had one dish there, the Kung Pao chicken, and it's pretty potent stuff!

I was afraid of this -- that notice has been up for weeks (fell off, was put back on) declaring that it's closed for kitchen works, but I haven't seen sign of any.  Hmph.  Any other local CHinese takeways recommended?

The North China is fantastic. Lovely food, lovely family. The problem with most decent chinese restaurants is that good chinese dishes rarely survive the trip home. The food is designed to come from wok to table and be eaten in an instant.

i;ve been going to the chinese on Acton High Street - called the Dragon something?? It's a couple of doors from Euphoria which is under the ACTON sign as you drive into the high street.Their Deep Fried Beef is very good and they even do a large lunchbox (all day and night) for £ 4.80. Well worth a trip.Carl

Oh no! What a shame! Their chilli crab was out of this world and I read people came from all over London for their Sichuan dishes. It was the same with the amazing Korean that was the other end of Churchfield road. People came from miles away as it was so authentic. Gutted.

Much as I love Indian food, I think we're okay for that, what with the totally excellent Bombay Bistro, the really good Anokha AND the Taj a couple of doors down.  Not sure how they think they'll fare when the brilliant Sichuan couldn't last.

I rather agree - Chinese within walking distance would be a joy.I still miss the Korean which used to be where the CAPE charity shop now is.

Surely the North China is only a 5 minute stroll away? And it is still my favourite Chinese bar none.

I love it but it's a fair bit further than that - and really can't eat there as often as I fancy Chinese. Would need a named seat.

Seems an odd choice of business when Taj is just a few doors down and Anokha a short distance away. Can Churchfield Road and Acton really support another Indian restaurant?

Especially as the menu looks far from inspiring.  I took a look, and saw no reason to go there rather than, say, the Bombay Bistro.
