Best way to check these things, Google a sentence from the email, see what comes up. Here it is on the BT Website

Thanks Fred.  I did read it, but what started the alarm bells was the way it started "Hello"I have had spam similar, which was not from BT.  Always check senders address before opening spam.

It is a bit slack just beginning 'hello'. My bank, for example, makes it clear that any genuine email from them will address me by name.
