Anyone know a friendly tree surgeon?
Ideally a good friend or member of your family who would be willing to pop over for 15 minutes to give us some advice on whether we should cut down our apple tree or not - in exchange for a nice cup of tea and a choccy biscuit (as opposed to a thumping great call-out fee!).The tree has graced our garden in Goldsmith Avenue for more than 23 years, but has always had only 'half' a trunk. Maybe it's the remains of a bigger tree that split in two, with our predecessors dumping the other half? Maybe, during some hellish thunder storm many moons ago, a bolt from on high split it asunder (unlikely in sunny Acton...)? Who knows? And still it leans and continues to have its exposed 'wound' nibbled away by birds as they feed on all manner of tasty bugs. But still it also bears wonderfully pretty blossom, the greenest of leaves, and some very tasty apples. What a shame then to end its life prematurely - when a cup of tea and a choccy biscuit might stay its execution...
