New Bakery in Acton High Street

Just to put in a good word for the new Bakery in the High Street. The bread is baked on the premises and I also bought some lovely Carrot Cake. I think the owners are from the Ukraine and were very friendly.

Near the Scope Shop. Used to be the old Curtain Shop.

I too was very impressed with the new Bakery in the High Street. The bread was very tasty and the shop is well presented and clean. As for the owners, they are Armenian.I've also heard, their plan is to bake fresh bread from a variety of different countries. So if you have any suggestions - feel free to say - you never know.

Ah Dave in the Newsagents got their Nationality wrong lol. Anyway well worth a visit and some lovely looking cakes there as well.

What an amazing shop - really good value cakes and reasonable prices.  Popped in today and was very impressed.  Sadly, not many people in there - not quite sure why given the quality and price of their products.  I shall definitely go in there again.

I recommended this bakery, reasonable prices, good selection and friendly staff.The place is clean, pastries not too dear and they serve tea, coffee etc.A welcome addition to Acton High Street.

Got to agree with Tony, the carrot cake is lovely and very much cheaper than Angela Malik's!Will try the ciabatta I bought tonight, but it smelt delicious and was still warm (and very tempting!)Lets hope they survive, the choice of bread is good and the prices very reasonable - cheaper than Morrisons, and a lot nicer looking!

I'm still a fan of the Morrison's multigrain but (qv other thread) it isn't always in stock and when it is, is often sliced.

I had a slice of carrot cake today, very nice and well priced at £1.29. The bread looked good too, although not sure if their prices are lower than Morrisons.

Surely really good cake should be a bit expensive?Otherwise we all just eat it all the time.The best cheesecake I have ever eaten - from Classic Image in Turnham Green Terrace - is nearly £4 a slice. Which is just as well given the calorie count.

Some bakeries and coffee shops are perhaps just a little bit more greedy than others?That's why it is a good idea to shop around.

I'm sure others have noticed, but I only just peeked in while waiting for a bus early one morning and it looks like this is no longer the bakery it was, but has been turned into a Polski Sklep.  Where the shelves were once lined with different breads, now there's just the usual soft drinks, crisps and biscuits, with a counter selling a small selection of rolls, pastries and cakes and coffee.  A pity, 'cos I never got to go in there.

Yes I too noticed this was now a Polski Sklep and was quite disappointed - I wanted some more of their lovely bread! I guess they were not doing enough business as a bakery and so decided to diversify. A shame really as there are a lot of Polski Skleps but no good bakeries!

They still sell all the same bread. Just walk to the back of the shop and its right there, where the old counter used to be.

The breads and cakes are still there.I agree it's a shame though - the overall impression you get from the street is the usual tins and packets you can buy in a dozen other Polski Skleps.

I bought a huge Turkish flatbread from there just after it opened.It was beautifully fresh and only 79p.Absolute bargain.unfortunately, I went back again today.I bought 2 raisin pastries, a slice of lemon cake and a slice of banana cake.Both the pastries were burnt black on the underside.The banana cake was dry on top and wet and soggy underneath, but the lemon cake was the worst.It was so stale and the sponge so hard, I couldn't get a fork into it.It must have been at least a week old.The icing was rock hard and shattered when I hit it with the fork.The whole lot went into the bin.This shop has a few weeks at most left to trade if this is now the standard of their produce.What a shame.A good shop has been totally ruined and I will never go back there again.

For those who got iffy cakes, perhaps give it a second chance, or explain to them the problem?I found the bread to be really good - fresh, tasty and cheap (99p-£1.99).I thought it was a very good alternative to somewhere like Morrison's for bread, and it would be good to see a small, independent shop like this succeed, but it needs our support.It is next to RSK estate agents, BTW.

I have never had a problem with their cakes. I wonder if the adverse hot weather has had some effect.

To be honest I've been in there a couple of times and bought bread which was very good but I was VERY disappointed with the new branding and layout when it changed and I now find it intimidating. I guess that's my issue but I can't see why they had to alienate themselves, it would've been nice to make it classy looking and not just another generic shop.

Yes, the design, set-up, stock etc does seem very 'Eastern European' and they do look at you a bit when you come in, probably because most of their customers are from that neck of the woods and they probably know them all. But I don't see that as a reason not to go in there.The few times I have been in they have been really friendly and polite.They would probably do better if they put the fresh stuff - e.g. bread - in the window, but perhaps the branding/advertising across the lower part of the windows is to attract Eastern Europeans passing on buses and in cars etc?Great to have somewhere making fresh, non-supermarket 'plastic' bread, at good prices.Same bread in Chiswick would be £3-4 - try the bread shop on CHR opposite the Catholic church/Zizzi restaurant to see what I mean!

Nigel,If you find it intimidating have a word with them and express your views. If  there had been more footfall when it was a Bakery I am sure they would have continued with the theme. That's the major problem they have to pay a rent and if the original formular does not work they have to explore other options.
