Thumping bass car stereos

It's a pet hate of mine, maybe everyone else is fine with it, but when I'm walking along the road or enjoying a beautiful day in the park, it's only a matter of time before the calm is rudely shattered by some dick who needs the whole postcode to hear how loud and low his car stereo can go. I find it one of the most antisocial and obnoxious features of urban life and it amazes me that this seemingly recent phenomenon has not been addressed by parliament. Current law prohibits noise but a complaint has to be made before the police will act, which is no use when the offender is moving. The police should make on-the-spot arrests, fines or confiscation of equipment. I suppose my purpose in this posting is to see how many others feel this way and if anyone has any ideas or experience of petitioning for law change.Maybe something good starts right here.

on par with noise coming from headphones on london transport or very loud private telephone conversations in public places or even worse talking with those alien bluetooth things in their ears or speaking into thin white or black wires.......When I was young it was only the nutters who seemingly had conversations with themselves out loud in the streets, but then....I am getting old and I am foreign!

Christopher, I would think the police are too busy trying to keep us safe in our beds from murderers, rapists and nutters breaking into our homes. I'm not saying it isn't annoying (although I tend to play my music quite loud from time to time), but not quite at the levels that some drivers do. I think their cars are adapted to fit the largest speakers possible - and almost invariably, the sound quality is terrible, with the speakers performing way above their comfort level.My personal pet hate is people that have to have long, loud phone conversations on the train. There is a lady on the Overland and I feel I know her extended friends and family intimately now, having been forced to listed to countless conversations on my journey home.Still, live and let live I say!Carl

Backing you every inch of the way, Christopher! I LOATHE them. Bass should not be so loud as to cause physical discomfort to others. They are temporarily deafening and give you a nasty punch in the chest as the car passes. Once got stuck in a jam behind one, causing my own car to vibrate from end to end and, boy! did I feel lousy by the time I finally got away from it. Agreed - pretty difficult when they keep moving.

If you pretend to enjoy the beat by dancing or shaking to it, they will soon turn it down as they don't want someone else to enjoy it.A few years ago I took a series of photos of particularly obnoxious xmas light displays, I was using a tripod so quite conspicuous, as soon as I was noticed the lights were turned off!

Couldn't agree more.  The sound systems some people have in their cars would be more than adequate for public performances.  Not the same as someone who has a modest radio in their car.  I agree that it should be possible for police to make on the spot arrests etc, but can you really see this happening?  Looks like we'll just have to put up with it!
