Only in Acton (and North China)

We went for the first time in weeks today - time out from the no-carb diet. Not only was the food wonderful, all the better for abstaining for a while, but the place was heaving - on a Tuesday night in late July yet.Every table full and what an eclectic collection: one large group of Chinese-speaking women and children, another mixed Chinese group, a big table of three Polish couples, half a dozen pairs of regulars, an Asian family and a big group which looked if it had come straight from a suburban golf club.Laurence and his team were run off their feet but wholly delightful, as ever.

We love the North China. When I was at Sky, it was my team's favourite regular night out. We have always had great food, brilliant service and a top night there - whether it's two of us or twelve. I've eaten a lot of Chinese food in my time but the North China is consistently great.

Sounds positively idyillic and almost written by PR ... What about the drunks outside , single guys with cans of lagers drinking on the street and intimidating customers when I visited last weekend Great food but you want more on a night out ... Total overall experience .

Hmmm.. Sounds like most nights out I've had in Soho - except with better Chinese food... Seriously - you are right Peter, no one likes that sort of hassle but you can't blame the North China team for the drunks at the bus stop outside.

Are you casting aspersions on my independence?If so, is that sensible without any evidence? As it happens, I have never experienced drunks outside/hassle at bus-stop or any the other downside. Lucky me.

I too have never experienced drunks/hassle outside the North China, and I think it is Acton's best - and busiest restaurant.Sara, I think Mr Truesdale has a very low opinion of Acton, which makes me wonder why he came to live here in the first place! Anything anyone says is good, he seems to find a negative comment to make.....

I agree with Sara and Amanda.  I have never been bothered by drunks outside the North China. I have seen Lawrence's staff sweeping the pavement; not something you see outside many shops/restaurants nowadays.  It is a great restaurant, with excellent food and service.I really don't recognise the Acton in which Mr Truesdale lives!

I've been going to the North China for over thirty years. It used to be the place for a birthday treat dinner for the children and stray Irish friends when they were younger. Lawrence's mother and friends used to play Mah Jong in the corner. Food suitable for anyone, even people a bit suspicious of 'foreign food' That lemon chicken is always a winner. Always full of people from all over West London. Kudos to the owners. The best kind of local restaurant. We are so lucky to have it. Peter, they do an excellent take away.
