With Virgin (not that I'm one) no complaints with the two mobile phones, albeit they are PAYG.

Minimum 20p per call now, I fear. This was to 'simplify' things for customers. Nothing simpler than 150% price hike. Thanks, guys.
After years on pay as you go I switched to virgin contract because of a good deal, £12.80 per month for unlimited data and text , 150 minutes of calls . I bought the phone outright though.
Me too, Kim. I pay £10.50 for 120 minutes, 1GB data and a frankly ludicrous 3000 texts per month. I won't be sending 3000 texts in the rest of my lifetime, I shouldn't think.
Not sure what the "nightmare" is - obtuse pricing programmes, crap service, lack of PAYG value etc. but my family all swears by EE as now is (Orange and T-mobile before). In each case they have bought their phone outright (including an iPhone and Blackberry that each needed unlocking) and then through EE or Carphone Warehouse have each accessed the cheapest contract (EE in all cases) for their needs. Over four years plus now I have had no complaints off either wife or two teenage children.In summary buy outright if possible and shop around for the most suitable contract - locking yourself into one supplier for everything may not always be the best answer it seems.

Depends ultimately what you are after and wiling to spend. There do seem to be more reputable phone only suppliers now accessible in the UK. From memory my wife's new and unused iPhone via eBay was half the normal price from a UK supplier (but not the very latest model) and subject only to unlocking which is now a legal process for about £15 via O2 with whom it was registered by the original buyer. Buying locked in 2 year contracts are pretty expensive once you work out the true costs, hence my suggestion of looking at the phone and the provider contracts separately.
You don't need an iphone to do a bit of Googling when on the move, or check your email. My Sony Ericsson cost £120, new, unlocked and SIM free, and does everything I need.
