The New Acton Pool is getting there!
On Monday morning, 2 September, I saw the very first water trickling into the new London Borough of Ealing 25-metre, eight lane swimming pool being constructed behind Acton High Street on Salisbury Street, Acton. Obviously the engineers were just filling the pool area for the initial time to test how watertight it is before tiling begins. But it is very heartening news for all newcomers to Acton and for all of the former Friends of Acton Baths who fought between 1983 and 1990 to save the old pools from being demolished (and who were successful in doing so, so that the pools only closed in 2010 after a £2.5 million refurbishment in 1990). This must be the only swimming pool being built by any local authority anywhere in the UK at the moment, so it should give Acton a huge fillip when it opens next spring. Thought I'd share the good news. From: Eric Shanes, Chairman and founder of the Save Acton Baths campaign in 1983.
