Does anyone know a company or an individual that is 100% reliable that could transfer all my software (where possible) and documents etc from a PC to a MAC and get it all set up for me?

Recent Apple computers run on the free open source Unix-compatible BSD with a very expensive Apple front-end.There are packages such as wine (Wine Is Not an Emulator) which provide Free Open Source replacements for most Microsoft routines and are able to run many packages.It is easy to drag-and-drop copy files either singly or as complete folders over a local network connection (perhaps via your ADSL modem), but if Microsoft is a pain as usual I can give you a copy of Knoppix which runs from a bootable CD or DVD and provides all the facilities required without any need to write to your Microsoft box.

Hi Hermoine,This is my area of expertise.If you are still looking for someone then please send me an email.All of your data will come across, no problem.As far as applications- you usually need to buy the Mac version or use an emulator such as WINE or Parallels to run a virtual window.To do it legally you need a Windows Operating System license as well.James

Hi Chris, you probably saw my reply to James too.  I am a freelancer and having thought I had a window (no pun intended) to make the switch now, I am now going to have to wait until the end of the year. I will make a note of all of these comments for when I have the time.  Many thanks.  Hermione

Hermione, whatever option you choose, pre transfer I would proffer the old adage that if you are not already backing up your old Windows computer regularly onto a separate data storage (portable hard disc, Cloud etc.) then you should.I recently transferred my son's old Acer Window computer data to a Mac I had used for a few years and was upgrading from, so gave to him. I am not a computer expert but the transfer went pretty easily (especially helped by the Apple start up guidance). However to be on the safe side I did an extra separate back up to transfer so clean version.I did not bother to install any of the more complex programmes for Windows to be run on Mac systems (e.g. Parallel; VMware Fusion) but simply got him the Student's Mac Office suite installed (Word, Powerpoint and Excel). To date no complaints received!!

LibreOffice, (was OpenOffice, developed from Star Office), does all that for free.
