I hadn't heard the term 'guising' before, either, so looked it up:'Guising — children disguised in costumes going from door to door for food and coins — predates trick or treat, and is recorded in Scotland at Halloween in 1895, where masqueraders in disguise carrying lanterns made out of scooped out turnips, visit homes to be rewarded with cakes, fruit and money.'I always think of trick and treating as an imported US event (we lived in the US many years ago and I remember dressing up as a cowgirl aged 4!), so it's good to know the UK had the custom first.Last T&T visitors we had round here a few years ago were very suspicious large teenagers wearing black bin bags - but as they came round on 30th October I told them to go away!
