Our Dirty Nation

Did anyone watcch Panorama repofting on strrets filled with litter?In one street in Camden one side was swept whils the othee side of ths steet was kept dirty, this was an overnigh experiment. Next day the cean side of the street was still quite litter free but the litter on the opposite side had increased drmatically.It just goes to show that people pile rubbish on top of rubbish! I liked the slogans done by  Brentford  Council in  Essex such as 'Don't be a tosser' maybe stricter rules and penalties would help keep our streets clean!

I am not surprised at the results of the experiment. Rubbish breeds more rubbish. I always pick up the odd piece of litter from the green outside my house for that reason. People walk past and toss over the fence left over take aways and  drinks containers. If I leave it too long the rate at which the amount of litter increases accelerates.If someone fly tips a piece of furniture on a pristine corner of pavement, the next day there will be a fridge and old mattress and a telly joining them!I believe fines and by laws are in place in most boroughs but if they are not enforced they are useless.

If the laws against littering were only enforced. Surely, even the most moronic knuckle-dragger will desist if fined often enough.

There also needs to be more publicity for the fact that littering is an offence.  There used to be posters but you rarely see them nowadays.

The fines are too small, and getting prosecuted is a low risk, so culprits think they can get away with it. Certainty of prosecution is the key but hard to achieve.
