Red Lion & Pineapple

I just drove by and was surprised to see it in darkness and tables and chairs piled up inside. But I believe it's just a refurb before Xmas . I assume competition from the Chatsworth and the new Aeronaut has prompted them to up their game. All good for Acton

Peter dear The Red Lion is a 'Spoons pub. Its clientele is subtly different to how I see you. My grown up children still meet old school friends in there, and reminisce on their cunning efforts to get served when they were younger.

Marie thanks for pointing out its a "spoon" venue . I have no reason either for convenience nor nostalgia ,like your kids, to go to that part of Acton so wasn't aware ... I'll still push for a nice local eatery even with the £5 + glass of wine ( is there anywhere that charges less ??? Please no answers ...  )Anyone eatern in the Aeronaut ? Keep intending to try it out but a bit if a slep on a cold winters night

No. I am called Mary after Mary the Virgin Mother of God and there are many correct versions of Mary. Maire is just the Irish language form. Peopke adjust after a while

Interesting Peter, that in October (on a wet Sunday), you were recommending Queen's Park, yet won't travel 10-15 minutes walk away to The Aeronaut, nor indeed visit a market stall at the wrong end of Churchfield Road.  If locals won't spend money at local venues, they won't survive.

VivienneA 20 min walk and back through central Acton on a dark wet night to the Aeronaut is completely different to ( even when raining )a 5 min Sunday lunchtime walk through populated streets and short train journey to Queens Park.Besides at Queens Park on a Sunday I have a number of options to eat / drink if one proves full or not good.There is much more of a limited and pleasant choice around Morrison’s area !!!!I do support local buisness and will try out the Aeronaut but leave it for a daylight trip .

Peter,You make Acton sound so awful! Ok, the area outside Morrison's can seem a bit intimidating at night, but you don't have to walk past there to get to The Aeronaut - you can use the pleasant, quieter back streets.There are several nice places you could eat/drink at down 'that' end of Acton, if only you would stop being so negative about everything!Why did you choose to live in Acton if you don't like anything about it?

No disrespect to you, but i think you hit the nail on the head, i have always liked my couple of pints in the local pub or even club (CIU) but the pubs around acton are as rough as a beares hole, if you say hello to anyone they think there is something wrong with you or you are a member of the local constabulery(sorry about the spelling)

Maybe you visit the wrong pubs? The ones I have been to: George, kings head, goldsmith arms, rocket and station house (others since closed) have never shown any signs of being rough

Amanda I have friends from US staying this weekend and would love to try some of the nice places down 'that ' end of Acton rather than head back out after a day sight seeing . Stay local . Want something fairly nice for Sat night so not Chinese or Indian but good atmosphere upto £50/head with drinks OR somewhere for Sunday lunch . Again with buzz ( and yes might try the Rocket) . Where can you recommend ? Thanks

The Goldsmith's Arms used to be a good pub/food etc. although I haven't been there for a few years

It's now a flaming something - so not sure about the food. But the landlord is lovely and helped host the Goldsmith residents Jubilee street party last year. Pauline, who runs Pensioners Alone at Xmas - the Chiswick group which makes Xmas day special for elderly people who live on their own - drinks there and John now hosts that event - PAAC was chucked out of the Chiswick Day Care Centre a couple of years ago when it closed. It's quite traditional in some way and has a big beer garden.

Peter,Pity you do not want Chinese or Indian - as some of the best restaurants in Acton are Chinese and Indian! Why are they not 'fairly nice'? Thai Nice is very good, but that may be too much like a Chinese or Indian option for you.The Chatsworth was OK when we visited, but that was some time ago. A bit further down towards Ealing, is The Lantern - a Greek restaurant that used to be good, but is under new management I believe. I have heard Persian nights is nice too, but have not tried it yet.Sorry, but my preferred restaurants would not have the 'buzz' you so desperately require, nor does my bank balance usually allow me to spend £50 a head for a meal with drinks! (I'm a 'cheapskate' and am quite happy with a cheaper option - such as a Wetherspoons. Something to do with my up-bringing I suppose, when money was tight, meals out were a real treat - and a Berni Inn was a favourite choice, but you may be too young to remember them?)
