walking the Thames Path

Yesterday we walked from Maidenhead to Ditchley, A warm still day, the river calm with lots of wildfowl and the Queen's swans bending their graceful necks in salute. We had lunch (don't we always?) in a pub in Windsor and returned home via Richmond. A lovely day, the last walk of 2013.We will be walking twice in January 2014. Jan 16th will be an urban Thames walk and Jan 26th is likely to begin our trek from the source of the Thames in Oxfordshire. all details on our closed Facebook page. Our next walk is this coming Sunday. We are moving to higher ground because of all the rain so the walk is from Princess Risborough to Wendover, with the lunch stop at the Swan at Greater Kimble. I am so looking forward to this opportunity to walk in the beautiful Chilterns. Our group is usually eight to ten people, so if you would like to come with us. Know you are welcome, but be sure you have boots and a waterproof coat. PM me for meeting places and train times.

If you were checking the weather you will have noticed it rained last Sunday. Of course it didn't stop the walk and we had a delightful if muddy walk across the Chilterns and back to Wendover by the Aylesbury Ring. Very good lunch at the Swan in Greater Kimble. One thing. Those who did not have genuine rain proof coats and boots soon realised their mistake. And they call me Pollyanna! If you have to steal the coat from the teenager next door, get yourself some waterproof gear if you intend to walk in winter. Next walk will be Sunday 9th February and is likely to be on the canal from Park Royal to Kings Cross. PM me for info.

On Sunday 9th February, we will walk part of the Grand Union canal; from Alperton to Kings Cross, with a stop for lunch around Lisson Grove.  It is an easy walk with lots to see. There are about seven of us going, so space for one or two more brave souls who fancy stretching their legs. PM me for times etc. Be welcome.

The planned Thames Path walks will only be comfortable for people with webbed feet for a couple of months to come. After next Sunday's walk on the Grand Union canal, we will turn our attention to several Time Out walks which will take us out of Metropolitan London, but  are accessible by public transport.  If you have been waiting for us to up our game a bit, you might like to join us for one of more of these walks. Ideally you will join our Facebook group to see photos, comments, and discussion as well as start times and venues. I do write one e mail for Facebook haters but I keep it basic. Eleven of us walked the Grand Union canal path yesterday, starting at Alperton and ending at Kings Cross. A very interesting walk, plenty of wild fowl, birds building nests and some very interesting industrial buildings. The new Kings Cross complex is not finished, but I rather like the open spaces. The next walk will be outside London on Sunday 23rd. We have given up on the Thames Path for the time being. F or obvious reasons, the Thames Path winter project has transferred to higher ground until Easter. On sunday we did a circular walk from Saunderton. Lovely open countryside beginning to show signs of Spring. A little wind expertly exploited by the red kites soaring and sliding above us. Cosy lunch at the Lion (always food). Where the walk took us through farm land and on bridle paths, there was some mud, but it is a winter walking project so to be expected. Lovely day in good company. Next walk also in the Chilterns in two weeks. PM me or join the Facebook group for info. I will be in Ireland at the Ennis book festival myself, but the others will be walking.

Just about to hit the road (Local burglers please be aware the house is full of adult children and their friends) The walk in the Chilterns will take place without me. The walk next Sunday will be from Great Missenden to Amersham. About five people already booked. This is a Time Out grade 5 walk so just over 10 miles and three hills. Lunch probably at the Squirrel. PM me for meeting point. I take the opportunity of mentioning that the walks are non political. Walkers are every shade of political opinion and none (mostly none). Dogs and children who are willing to walk are also welcome. See you there.

On Sunday we will walk from Princess Risborough to Great Missenden, pausing at a carefully researched hostels for refreshments as is our custom.If you haven't yet walked with us the longer evenings and warmer weather might tempt you to join us? You will need good boots and a rainproof jacket all the same. Our walk two weeks ago was d e delightful with signs of Spring all round us and the sun shone down. Do think of coming along. The last walk before Easter will be on Good Friday, starting later to allow attendance at an early service. The walk will be the Tring circular, starting and ending at Tring station. Direct train from Shepherd's Bush to Tring. Lunch at Little Gadesden. PM me for meeting times etc. All welcome. Spring is here and it is the perfect time to slip on those walking shoes and sample the great outdoors.

Yesterday nine of us did the Time Out circular walk from Tring. A beautiful sunny day, with sheets of bluebells in the shady places and cowslips in sunny spots. Many lambs with their mothers, skipping and playing in the sun. This walk goes through the Ashridge Estate which was holding an Easter Egg hunt for the children. Lots of young families and dogs on this part of the walk, together with an upmarket ice cream stall where we dallied for a while. Next walk tba, but likely to be a return to the Thames path abandoned earlier in the year. I am very glad to have spent time in the Chilterns though. We are lucky to have such delightful countryside and good rural pubs so easy to reach by public transport. Come with us another time.

Yesterday we walked from Chesham to Great Missenden. Beautiful Spring day with wonderful displays of bluebells, tiny little daisies, fields of sown wheat and barley and the skylarks singing their hearts out overhead. Lunch at Little Bottom, an idylic village with its own green I was surprised by how rural it all was Once we had allowed a disheveled group of Duke of Edinburgh candidates to overtake us, we barely saw another soul.
