Sandra - Speaking as a doting cat owner - yes, your furniture will get clawed, yes, you'll get fur everywhere (not so bad if you have a short haired cat), no, your home will not smell as long as you make sure the cat is neutered and the litter tray is kept clean. But if you do decide to have one, please, please get one from a charity rather than buying one. Charities are overloaded with cats needing homes at the moment, and most will supply a cat that has been neutered, wormed, treated for fleas and given a basic health check. Places selling cats do not do this. The charities do, of course, expect a donation, but at least you'll give a home to a needy cat.
