walking the Thames Path

Happy New Year to all walkers, including those who have yet to lace up their boots. Our first walk of the year will be from Shepperton to Teddington via Hampton Court on 12th January. We would delighted to have your company, and if you want to try walking part of the way and going home after lunch, that will be fine. Not everyone wants to spare the whole day, but those who do find it most enjoyable.Please join our Facebook group for directions, lunch suggestions, train times etc. PM me for info. It is a fine group, with a slightly different composition every time we walk and a warm welcome for newcomers as long as they have a story to tell. Bit like the Canterbury Tales. See you there.

It will not surprise you to find that Plan B is in operation for the Thames Path. Due to flooding we are moving to higher ground for the next walk - Sunday 26th January. The group is debating whether to do a canal walk from Park Royal to Kings Cross or whether to move the walk to the Chilterns around Chequers. Decision shortly. If you would like to join us (and there is someone new every week) please pm me with your interest. You will need good walking boots and a waterproof coat. I recommend 'borrowing' the coat Last Sunday, we altered our journey as we heard Shepperton was mostly underwater. With four new walkers, we walked from Kew Bridge to Albert Bridge, thus completing the metropolitan bit of the Thames Walk. Some of our number peeled off at Hammersmith Bridge, arguably the prettiest bridge on the river. The rest continued to Putney for lunch and a stalwart three ended the walk at Albert Bridge and took the District line back to Acton and home. A good day out with nice walking weather and good company. Every walk brings additional stories about the Thames with Mike telling us about a bronze age custom of offerings to the Gods just about Wandsworth. A haul of bronze age weapons was found just by that spot a few years ago. Something new every time. Are you coming with us?

There's a lovely walk around Chequers which we did many times in the past. If I remember rightly, it started from Wendover with the short, sharp shock of the climb up Coombe Hill and returned via something called Happy Valley.
