Ciambella - new cafe on High Street

Just been to the new cafe opposite the police station. Lovely inside but the friendly owner had no menu  as she "wanted to see what people ordered." I like to be inspired by a menu and know what I'm paying. Could do well with a menu!!

That is a little odd. So can you just go in and say 'I'll have some curried pheasant with quinoa please'?

You jest - but I actually had curried pheasant for dinner on Friday night. Delicious. Quinoa was off as far as I know!

Not even stalking deer (apparently Saturday was the last day of that season in Scotland) but was staying on an estate where they do all that sort of thing... Maybe the pheasant was curried to disguise it having been shot some time ago...And I note that venison is on the menu (yum) even in the proto-socialist utopia of New Lanark.

just ask for coffee to start with, and then politely say you would like to eat something. Ask "what's chef's recommendation." If they say "whatever you prefer," ask for shark fin soup and give a good lecture on endangered mammals.

If there's no menu, then you can't know what you'll be expected to pay. Who's going to order under those circumstances? I don't think they've thought this through, unless you get to pay what you think is fair.
