Just went to return a book, and its closed until 5 April when it moves into the new town hall. Rather sad not able to go into the Passmore Edwards building to say goodbye.

Luckily I went in to change my books on 17th March and saw the notice. I was able to look round for the last time and in my heart say thank you to Mr Passmore Edwards. Wherever I have lived in London I have used a library gifted by him. I do so hope they will cherish the building. Floreat Actona!

Apparently the council intend to sell it for as much as possible. No-one will tell the potential Arts Centre what councillors even mean to get for it. And this in spite of the Town Hevelopment net squillions because of the increase in property prices in Acton.Floreat Actona indeed!

Our nursery class teacher taught us all to read so I first tipped up at the library aged 4 when it seemed to me to be an Aladdin's Cave of treasures. I still felt that way about it when I said goodbye to the lovely old building and I'm a pensioner now. Just a few questions:We were originally told that the library would occupy the large public hall area, giving the added possibility of a mezzanine floor but it's been allocated part of the leisure centre building with much less space. How did this come about and what's to happen to the reference section?Why can no-one win against developers? They present the same plans time and again until they get acceptance. The distinguished buildings of Acton are being replaced in short order by a bunch of frankly ugly brick boxes.So thanks again Mr Passmore Edwards for your gift - not only free access to every kind of book for working-class families like mine but for housing them in a building created with generosity and civic pride and displaying the best of contemporary design and craftsmanship.And please get the library opened asap - I already have withdrawal symptoms......

The lovely-sounding suspended Mezzanine was one of the many really interesting and innovative proposals suggested to the Town Hall Team consultation during the last Council administration.All the lovely bits like the mezzanine were stripped out after our work finished, by those now in charge.It's now utilitarian and profit-maximising (did you see the front page of the Ealing and Acton Gazette this morning?)
