PLAYING OUT - Cumberland Roaf

The playing out scheme has worked so well on Goldsmith Avenue that we hope to extend it to Cumberland Road and possibly other roads where residents are willing. The idea is the road is closed to through traffic once a month for two hours on a Sunday afternoon to allow children to play safely. Tea and homemade cake, impromptu stalls selling lemonade, bikes, skates. hopscotch, scooters, neighbours chatting,...... what's not to like? Of course residents must agree and it needs a minimum of 50% of all the residents for the permit to be granted. So if a smiley neighbour knocks on your door asking for your support, do think of signing her petition.

It seems to be working well on Goldsmith Avenue - we do ours on a Saturday afternoon. Sometimes it's a bit slow to start but by about half an hour in, lots of kids on bikes and scooters and quite a few neighbours chatting and drinking tea.Next month we go back to 3pm- 5pm - with the clocks going back. We hope that will bring even more people out.Wouldn't it be great if there was one each weekend on different local streets, so there was always the option to prize the kiddies from their screens and get them playing out instead?

The Council is dead keen on Playing out. Rene McCaw has been very helpful, printing out all the letters and survey sheets which we need for the consultation. Any other road interested?
