Uberhaus

Does anyone have any idea what the developers mean by this name for a block of flats in South Acton? It just seems perverse.

Susan - saw this the other day and also wondered.  Do you think it's a posh name for a penthouse?  Or is 'uber' under, in which case it could be a posh cellar!

From  the Urban dictionary:-uberhausSomething of such great significance that it is overbearing compared to simular subjects."Wow, He thinks his car is so uberhaus" "That's because it is! Check out those rims! They are way better than yours."

I suppose 'Uberhaus' adds to the mix of 'Mon Repose', 'Lilac Cottage' and 'Home-Sweet-Home'.

I saw this because the E3 was on diversion and was struck by how 'regenerated' Bollo Brook Road looked.

I can just see the owners of the 'uberhausen' nipping to one of the two remaining local shops for a pint of organic milk of a Sunday morning...or not! I always wonder what the point is in building lots of new homes without providing new amenities in the area...is everyone in the area just supposed to trek to Chiswick to buy stuff?Although, of course, we do have the stunningly well-stocked (and by that I mean, NOT AT ALL) fairly-new Sainsbury's up at Acton Town, they could all come there...

The word is not German and seems to have been invited, and trademarked, by Countryside properties. They say "An überhaus™ is a home that, whilst set in an apartment building, is so much more than just an apartment. Each home is designed to explore the use of space: additional bedrooms, split levels, generous outside space and private ground floor entrances...". Stripping out all the sales jargon it sounds to me like just a larger than average flat or maisonette.

There is plans for amenities to be built along side the South Acton regeneration homes in the centre of the Estate.  South Acton is working hard to become part of the whole of Acton and its great to hear that only when a bus is on diversion do you get to see it!  Maybe what we really need is a coffee shop for every 10 residents as in central Acton!

The outline planning includes a supermarket in Phase 4, where the shops are currently, when Hardy Court is demolished. Around 2016. The developers reckon there will be enough residents to support a full size supermarket by then.  I imagine people might even cross the border from Chiswick to shop there. Much nearer than Sainsburys.As for überhaus, it's just a neologism dreamed up by the marketeers to get people talking about the development. Seems to be working.

It's not a bad price for a penthouse, the big downside being the location. Chiswick is 'minutes away'; well, the very edges of Chiswick, maybe. Nearest station Acton Town? .4 of a mile? As the crow flies, perhaps, double that by road.

Acton Town tube is a 10 minute walk. Chiswick High Rd is 15. I know. It's on my manor. South Acton is coming good at long last.

I like the way one of the slideshow pics is a sign which reads 'Acton Main Line 3/4, North Acton 1', when the three nearest stations listed are (understandably) South Acton, Acton Central & Acton Town...way to jump on that Crossrail bandwagon, developers!

That's good news - maybe South Acton will become another NottingHill or Islington, one never knows.
