Labour to hold Ealing Council (and Acton seats)

Back from the count and it's clear Labour have won East Acton and Acton Central, although the votes for those who split their three crosses between parties are being counted now. Ross, Maire and I congratulated Dan, Patricia and Abdullah and wished them good luck and left rather than stand around for several hours waiting for the inevitable to be announced. The Oaks got the Tories some votes around Shakespeare Rd but the Lib Dem vote has virtually disappeared (going to Labour if anywhere) and Ukip look as if they'll get 200-300 votes, which has done more damage to the Conservatives than anyone else. Many thanks to all those who did vote for me and my colleagues and appreciation for those who helped the campaign in other ways too numerous and boring to list.

Just to put it in context: there was only one UKIP candidate in Acton Central; if every single one of his 377 votes had gone to the highest polling Tory, Ross Bogert, that would still have left Mr Bogert nearly 300 votes short of taking the third seat. UKIP was absolutely irrelevant here.The hard stats are that Labour won in every one of the six polling districts in the ward (Poets' Corner and all), and also won the postal vote. This was a big Labour win, pure and simple.

It was a big Labour win not only in Acton Central but across the whole of London. Everywhere UKIP hurt the Tories and the Lib Dem collapse helped Labour. Labour were ahead by less in Poet's Corner than elsewhere (I reckon c150 votes below the average for the other polling districts), but the reality is that most people vote in local elections on national isues; local issues need to be on a par with the Tram to be likely to make a difference to the result.

Vlod does it occur to you that national issues might impact on local people?The bedroom tax and the privitisation of the NHS are just a couple.People are hurting and it is down to your party, time to stop apportioning blame on the previous government and start accepting that your party is getting things wrong.I never got you knocking on my door asking for my vote where were you?The Labour candidates turned up.I hope you fill the void of your political wilderness.

Of course national issues affect local issues, but a Labour council won't change benefit levels or NHS re-organisations, however much it might pretend it can. Knocked on plenty of doors but obviously missed you. Now I must be off to chase some tumbleweed.

Vlod,I know I could look this up but could you let us know1.  the actual total number of those who voted against the number of those who could have voted - in total for the Acton Central area2.  the numbers of those who voted for the Labour candidates and the numbers who voted for them last timeWho didn't vote and for what reason is important.

See the links for each ward at the top of the homepage -1. Turnout was 10,241 (38.26%) against 16,978 (58.7%) in May 20102.  For the 3 candidates, Lab got 5531 votes compared to 7294 in 2010Turnout in 2010 was higher than previous years too.

You can't really compare turnout with 2010, as that coincided with a national election which always has a higher turnout.
