Boiler Power flush

We recently had British Gas in to fix a fault and do an annual service on our boiler. We have a service contract which covers repair and service, however, the engineer said that we need a 'power flush' which is not covered and will cost £845. I have rang a plumbing company and been quoted £250 for the same thing. Has anyone else had this happen who has a British Gas service agreement and used a different company that they can recommend?

Hi Kevin!Yes, a few years ago I had my old boiler flushed out(honestly).  I used a local company as they were cheaper than British Gas, and it added a year or two onto the boiler's life span.  I can't remember who I used, but I did shop around.  You may have to get a new boiler.

British Gas recommend a PowerFlush at the drop of a hat,usually when they're a bit stumped on whats wrong or if it might cost them money.They'll will often cancel your cover if you don't have one.If you search on Watchdog and similar you'll find that in the past engineers were paid a bonus if you had one.I cancelled my BG contract got in a local heating engineer and without PowerFlush 4 years later still have a happy boiler.I'd suggest you do a search for CH on the forums, I had a bad experience though of course that could be a one off.

I had problems with Ch too.Are your radiators cold at the bottom? this is usually a sign that you need a powerflush.It is advisable to fit a magnaclean on the system which will extract dirt from the system as the water is pumped round.

I always use Gasworks - they are local and reliable.

This whole power flush thing is nonsense if you have a system that has been sealed for many years and that has never caused any problems. Got a new boiler a year ago, installed by some very reasonably priced and reliable local brothers recommended to me by a friend (Winter Warmth, 0208-5732798). They said it was standard these days, causing space problems (and, with that extra expense) with a lot of boxed in piping, but that it was only really of benefit with new systems or systems that had been drained and refilled.

I had a boiler service, small plumbing jobs, new rad, and Magnaclean fitted last summer by Heywood Heating (8575 2221) and all of the work was done efficiently and at a reasonable price. They said the Magnaclean was the best way to deal with an old system which has rust and debris in the pipes and rads (some of mine is 30 yrs old), as it keeps on removing the stuff that's produced by old parts of the system. It's worth contacting Daniel for a quote and/or advice. Julie
