Kew Midsummer Fete - Sat 17 June 11-6pm

A great charity fund-raising fete takes place this Saturday just over Kew Bridge on Kew Green (pond side).  The Kew Midsummer Fete is free to enter and runs from 11am til 6pm.  Main attractions are a Victorian fun fair, inflatables, mobile farm, over 114 stalls and a craft marquee, tug of war, friendly Dog Show (with celebrity judge, BBC journalist Sophie Raworth) beer and tea tents, a varied food court, charity raffle and lucky dip plus live music and local dance and karate performances.  A great family day out raising funds for 12 local charities.

Churchhill  mini cabs acton town

What a very rude bad service from this company . and the first thing you want coming the airport is a cab well never used them again they are a sham .just briefly  ask for a cab yes address  etc then this guy come with me then a lady behind asked for a cab same guy left me spoke to the women  he said come  across the road when I got their  no can't take you go back get another cab what because the women was going further she was taken first but she refused so we both got the bus she was not happy about the driver her safety  etc going to go and see the manger tomorrow something  not right here

Unexploded WWII bomb in Highlands Avenue?

I just noticed a tweet from the Met Police saying they were dealing with an unexploded WWII bomb in Highlands Avenue.  I am just next to Highlands and didn't see anything yesterday.  They tweeted an hour later to say it had been resolved and given the speed I doubt it was actually an unexploded WWII bomb, but would love more information or an explanation from the MPS!

Tea parties for Contact the Elderly

We are now looking for a new driver to help us out on just one Sunday afternoon per month....can you help? Contact the Elderly is a national charity and we have groups throughout England, Scotland and Wales. Our aim is to relieve isolation and loneliness among people over 75 who live alone.In essence, we hope to give a lifeline of friendship to frail, lonely older people.Many people are unaware of just how bad the problem of loneliness amongst older people is. It’s a silent epidemic. We don’t know they’re there if they never leave their house. They are easily forgotten.So how can we help? It’s a very simple idea. Our volunteers throughout the country arrange a Sunday afternoon of tea, sandwiches and conversation for their group once a month.Each group is made up of our volunteers and local older members. About 8 older members, several drivers and hosts.Volunteer hosts take it in turns to hold a tea party at their home. Although there is a party every month, hosts only need to hold one at their home once or twice a year.Volunteer drivers take one or two older members to and from the party once a month.And everyone enjoys an afternoon together, getting to know each other and hopefully making some lasting friendships.The outings put our older members back in touch with society and bring new life to them.To be a driver you need:   a driver’s license – of course!   a safe and reliable car with enough room for one or two passengers   to be happy to drive one or two older members to and from the  party once a month   to stay and have a good time at the party!And it’s not just good for the people you’re helping. Polling Station - Is this allowed?

My voting station is All Saints Church and when I went to vote there today, I saw a labour volunteer sitting in the hallway taking polling card numbers from people leaving the polling room. Although she is not in the actual polling room, she is still in the same premises (4 steps away from the room) and she's wearing a badge which says 'Vote for Rupa Huq'.I am asking, is this allowed? Is it legal to wear a badge inside the polling station?Does this not constitute to "campaigning", which is clearly not allowed on the polling day? I raised this with the Ealing security person there and his argument was she is not asking anyone to vote for Rupa Huq. But, I pointed at her badge which clearly says so! He asked me to talk to person in charge at the polling station but I didn't as I saw how busy he was.Apologies for any naivety as this is only my second time to vote (in the UK) and last time I didn't see any such volunteer..

Morrisons

After praising Morrison a few months ago when I noticed a distinct improvement, I am very disappointed with my last visit last Wednesday. As I got to the till, i noticed that 2 of the apples in a pack I had picked were rotten. The cashier offered to get a replacement but there were 4 people queuing behind me and I felt too embarrassed to ask so I went without apples. Tonight, as I start preparing dinner I find 4 rotten potatoes, yes properly rotten, in the bag I bought 4 days ago. The rest didn't look too clever either so I had to bin them. This is not good enough!

National Health Service breakdown and privatization: "Sustainability and Transformation Plans"

I'm deeply concerned that in the build up to the General Election there has been little discussion about the disastrous changes to the NHS being proposed by the local Sustainability and Transformation Plan, the "North West London STP" which covers 8 boroughs from Westminster to Hillingdon including Acton. These plans for the 44 "footprint" regions of England and Wales have been made in a secretive manner, with very little public information and are nothing more than plans to slash, trash and privatise our NHS.        But most worrying are large private healthcare companies and their lobbyists, such as Virgin Care and American healthcare companies including UnitedHealth, the previous employer of Simon Stevens CEO of the NHS, which will chase the UK's expenditure through the NHS using the Health and Social Care Act 2012. This pressure will inexorably lead to the American model of healthcare management which causes 50% of personal bankruptcies each year in the US. All the STPs call for "Accountable Care Organisations/Systems", a term which Americans recognise only too well. This system with low fixed budgets will be screwed down so that it does not meet the public need and it will turn the health provision in England and Wales into a two tier health system where the rich will pay and the rest of us will be left with a very poor, minimal NHS, like the American Medicare/Medicaid system.      I would urge all readers to contact their candidates and let them know that the public will not stand for the destruction of the NHS and all MPs must reject the STPs and reject the move to Accountable Care Organisations. These "new models of care" will end the NHS as a comprehensive service that provides the full range of care to all who need it, free at the point of need and fully accountable to the public (private companies will hide their waste as well as their profits).            Readers can find their candidates on the website. www.whocanivotefor.co.uk/elections

Did anyone see the fake terrorist witness board and filming of laying flowers outside the polling station at St Mary's Church tonight? Was it just pretend? Met some Muslim ladies who were appalled that this was happening at such a sensitive time.

There is a news story on the ChiswickW4 site about her previous career as a film actress. Curious that her Councillor Info page on the Ealing Council site makes no mention of this. I don't know if its included in her current literature. Labour's Land Value Tax would be excruciating for London

On page 86 of its manifesto Labour raises the prospect of a Land Value Tax (LVT):A Labour government will give local government extra funding next year. We will initiate a review into reforming council tax and business rates and consider new options such as a land value tax, to ensure local government has sustainable funding for the long term.I did the calculation for my house.  My current council tax is £2,270.  Under Labour's LVT proposals this would go up to £5,890, a rise of £3,620 or 160%.  It would be excruciating for my family.  Finding £3,620 out of an already reduced after tax income would effectively mean the end of holidays or a move to a smaller property.  It is quite easy to do this calculation for yourself.  Get your property value off Zoopla.  Multiply by 0.55 to get an estimate of the value of the undeveloped land.  Multiply 0.0085 to get the tax you would pay.  The rate of 0.85% comes from proposers of the tax themselves.  It is no good Labour claiming that this is scaremongering.  They have raised the proposal and stated the rate.  We know it has to be a large amount because they themselves are presenting it as a get out of free jail card for local government finance. Here is a mechanism that will allow Labour to pump vast funds into its local government clients without affecting headline tax rates for regular people.  The 1%ers will pay!  Unfortunately that means anyone who has struggled to buy a property in London.  Good luck on Thursday!
