Acton Crossrail Works: Information Bulletin Saturday 10 December 2016 — Sunday 29 January 2017This bulletin provides local residents with an outline of the work Network Rail and our contractors are undertaking in the coming weeks, including over Christmas, in your area. In order to provide a safe working environment for our engineers, certain work must take place at night and at weekends. Mobile screens/barriers or enclosures will be placed around the breaking equipment and other noisy hand-held tools, where practical to do so.Crossrail works at Acton Main Line station will provide a new station building, step free access to all platforms, a new canopy on platform 4 and extended platform lengths. London Councils Cash Flow

While I'm at it, I have a question to ask.  It's been bugging me for ages.Why do councils say they're broke when they have MILLIONS stashed away?  Recently I heard that Ealing has about 125 million. That make "cash strapped" a lie.Now, I can appreciate that they need some contingency reserve but isn't this amount somewhat over the top? Shouldn't they be spending it on the borough instead of counting it?They can't take it with them!

Mid 1800's Acton Wesleyan school has been demolished?

It looks like the school room and school mistress's house on Gunnersbury lane (opposite the Red Lion and Pineapple) has been demolished. The log book of the school dates from 1863 and contains some interesting entries about Acton schooling at that time. Here are two extracts courtesy of Acton historian no.55.Monday October 1st 1866." Mrs. Farmer came down this morning and dismissed the boys who were 10 years of age and upwards, the influence of this was felt among the rest of the pupils who have remained orderly and attentive since" Monday 6th January 1868 " The children came together again at 4.30 and partook of tea and cake in the school -room and in the evening were entertained by some dioramic views illustrating coal and coal mines"I wanted to post two pictures of the school taken from the same article by Mr. Bowater but I don't think this web site takes pictures? I'm sorry to see the school buildings go. The old chapel 1857 is still standing ( so far!)

Tony's in Horn Lane

Love this plaice! Used to visit Shams fish and chips in Churchfield Road (not related to them) throughout my teens and twenties.There's usually a queue in Tony's but it's worth the wait. The fish and chips come in a keyboard style box. The fragrance upon opening the box makes you feel like you're at the seaside.Sorry about the fish puns, couldn't leave it to salmon else!

illegal activity in horn lane

for a few months this blacked out shop has seen some very  questionable persons frequentingit. The police have been advised and nothing has been done. somking shisha inside urinating in the alley behind probalby no licence to operate. Not open to the public no menu apparently this is supposed to be a cafe. Any advice???? the location is 323 horn lane. There are young children living in the flats above and I fear they are smoking inside and do not have the correct insurance. This is an accident waiting to happen.  Neighbours have reported this to the police to no avail. I am sure there is something illegal going on.

Closure of Charing Cross hospital

Or, as they would like to have it on the poster campaign, CHANGES to A&E (they don't want the word closure to be used). This is what was agreed last week:Demolition of the current hospital at Charing Cross, with 55% of the site sold off to developers, replaced by a £150 million development on the remainder.Inpatient beds at Charing Cross reduced from 360 to just 24.A&E and acute surgery moved to St Mary's Hospital in Paddington with the new building at Charing Cross providing ‘an emergency service appropriate for a local hospital’. Meanwhile St Mary's itself, while retaining its A&E department will also be reduced in size, with 45% of its site to be sold, and the Western Eye Hospital in Marylebone Road will also be put up for sale with a proposed price tag of £270 million. The closure of A&E departments at Hammersmith Hospital in Shepherd's Bush and Central Middlesex Hospital A&E in Park Royal are also going ahead on September 10, with Imperial hiring top advertising agency M&C Saatchi to inform the public of what it calls a "change" to services, for a reported free of £55,000.

I would just like to say a big thank you to the lady who found my wallet on Churchfield Road today.I was at the checkout in Morrisons when I discovered it had gone, my first thought was that I had been a victim to pick-pockets in the store, but I thought I should check back at the salon first and found that a lovely lady had handed it in.If you pop into the salon (Anthony Bell) I would like to thank you personally.

What's Happening to Acton ???

I am aware that this topic regarding the state of our streets has been mentioned on the forum numerous times, and it is obvious that the situation is getting worse!MATTRESSES AND FLY-TIPPINGRight now there are actually 4 mattresses in my area (one of which is in a neighbour's front garden) but no matter it is still an eyesore and has been there for ages.Why is this happening more and more?  Acton has become a dumping ground in recent years but yet nothing seems to be done to tackle the problem. When purchasing a bed or mattress it should be made clear that the store remove the old mattress and dispose of it otherwise NO SALE! We did this some time ago.The level of fly-tipping is getting out of control and where rubbish is dumped others seem to think they will do likewise.  We have several black bags in a street nearby for a few weeks now!Since the demise of Streetwatchers the situation has become much worse, at least we reported incidents of antisocial behaviour to the Council.GRAFFITIGraffiti is on the increase, especialy along Acton High Street where the same 'tag' appears on any spare surface, one can see it on the front of The Oaks site, The nightclub near the bridge, and at the other side of the bridge on The Vale the same 'tag' appears! I wonder what happened to the special van which used to go around cleaning up the mess left by vandals.STREET CLEANINGNow the autumn is well and truly here unfortunately this now means our streets are covered in slippery wet leaves, yet the frequency of street cleaning has decreased!  In my street there was an attempt to sweep the leaves (the evidence is 1 small half full green bag) but of course this is just a tip of the iceberg. Does anyone know how often our streets should be properly swept?  One can see the men sweeping up in Horn Lane but not the side streets unfortunately. This will lead to further problems like blocked drains, and injuries when residents slip and fall on the leaves!WHEELIE BINSAgain these are not being returned to within the boundary of each property. Residents are advised NOT to leave Wheelie Bins on the pavement but in our street and streets nearby some are permanently left on the street, and AMEY are not helping the situation as their employees seem to just leave them on the pavement!Rant over!

Found Tortoiseshell Cat - Wendell Park

Hi - in searching for our lost beige and black tabby cat Robin, we have found a dark tortoiseshell cat (black with some ginger) hiding in a garage.She's likely about a year old, but very small (2.5 kg) and is not microchipped. I suspect this will just increase the amount of rubbish left lying around as rampant consumerism blinds the senses and more "stuff" is bought without any thought of how and where to dispose of the items superseded.  It will be interesting to see how many large unflattened boxes appear...

Acton mosque posters promoting alternative Xmas

Can you imagine if Christians plastered Acton with alternative Eid posters ? There would be uproar , news crews and police arrests. Every British person respects other religions , so Acton mosque should not question a special time of year for local Christians by postering Acton questioning the validity of Xmas! Please respect everyone's beliefs !

Lost Tabby Cat - Aylmer Road, W12

Our 1 year old black and beige tabby went missing yesterday. He has green eyes, very symmetrical black bullseye markings on his sides, and a small white patch on his chin. He's small and shy with a quiet voice - we expect that he's hiding in a garage / shed.He answers to the name of Robin and was last seen between Aylmer and Emlyn Roads in W12. Refuse - street collections

My apologies if this has been mentioned before but I couldn't find anything when I entered 'refuse' in search.Apart from being personally affected by the changing collections  -they do not seem to recognise that some council tenants might like to continue with recycling using the old green boxes and white bags because they won't or can't supply new wheelie bins- apart from this, have you noticed the build up of rubbish in the general street bins and recycling areas?I phoned the council about the recycling one next to Morrison's in Acton three weeks ago which was in a terrible state and,after keeping me on the phone for nearly 20 minutes, they finally said they would do something about it and did. However, it's built up again and people are now again throwing their unwanteds onto the ground near the bins or even better into the surrounding hedges! It's probably a borough wide phenomenon as I noticed a similar situation with a large bin in Mattock Lane not far from the Questors Theatre - bin chocker, rubbish thrown around it.I will phone the council again today.
