89 91 Shakespeare Road

I just wanted to let people know that Shakespeare Road Residents have lost the 3rd planning application to save 91 Shakespeare from demolition and to prevent the Developers from building 3 cramped little yellow brick houses and 2 flats on such a well known and well loved Victorian Street.  After 2 years of fierce opposition from Local residents Ealing Council went to a committee of 12 Non Acton Residents/councillors who voted unanimously in favour of this sub standard scheme.  The Council also gave way on giving the Developers 3 on road parking spaces to stop them building a car stacker/car lift which was deemed a potential traffic hazard.  David Buckingham,   Local Architect of The Oaks Alternative ,  has spent a lot of his time designing a beautiful scheme where the building is retained and developed into 2 well proportioned ,  modern, practical houses  of over 2000sq ft with a modernist dream house in the infill.   If anybody out there has got a brilliant idea of a last ditch rescue attempt for 91 please please contact us.   Please also check out the Oaks Alternative (video of Davids proposed vision is on youtube)  as the more people comment the better and it is fantastic!

What's the delay???

Nothing seems to be happening to the front of St Mary's Church which was supposed to be having new fencing and so on.It does seem to be taking a while now and yet when I passed by today nothing was happening!Someone was trying to park their car in front but as the parking spaces have been reduced they gave up and drove away!

Call re Burglar & Medical Alarms in Goldsmith Avenue tomorrow

I have just had a phone call trying to persuade me to sign up for a "free" alarm system.  On close questioning it turns out it would cost £299 to install and at least £5 per week afterwards.  He was very slick in his presentation and explanation of how the police prefer this type of system and they provide it for free.Be warned!

Recycling Bags

I ordered some recycling bags from Ealing Council on 6th November and when I called to chase today I got an answer of 'this order is still being processed'... even though I was told they would be with me within 5 days. The person I spoke to said that she had put a 'note' on this order to say I had called and when I asked if she thought that would help speed things along she said no?! Seen as recycling should be reasonably high on the councils priorities list this is pretty disappointing. Any ideas who I moan to?

Bathroom Job

Hi,I was wondering if anyone could recommend someone good and local to install a small electric extractor fan / vent in a bathroom. Morrisons and GM Feed

You might not be aware that Morrisons supermarkets have recently relaxed their policy on GM (genetically modified) feed in their own label poultry products.  I received this response from their customer services dept recently:"Morrisons is not altering its policy on the use of GM in food: we do not use genetically modified ingredients in any of our own brand products and have no plans to change this.  However, in order to ease pressure on farmers and to strengthen our ability to hold down prices for consumers, we are no longer specifying that our poultry farmers use non-GM feed..............Food from animals fed on authorised GM crops is as safe as food from animals fed on non-GM crops. However, we understand that some customers want meat products that are from animals fed a non-GM diet and we offer those consumers choice through our organic range."In contrast to Morrison's last paragraph, there is now mounting evidence that GM feed does not get fully broken down in the guts of animals fed on it and can also cause them considerable health problems.  There is not much evidence that eating said animals is safe for humans in the long term.  If you want to avoid poultry fed on GM feed, go to Sainsburys or M&S, or buy organic.

Church Road - Drug Dealing

Twice a week I take my children to Church Road to attend ballet at Acton Ballet School which is based in Ruskin Hall and also to Gymnastics at the Baptist Church hall. I have seen open, blatant drug dealing on a number of occasions right outside both of these locations and also outside the Damien Centre. I have reported this to the Safer Neighbourhood Police. There is no police presence whenever I am there and the dealing continues in these locations frequented by children and vulnerable people.Have any other forum members observed this activity?

Hoover purepower spares available

Our purepower 2000 no longer works, so does anyone need the spare cleaner bags, belt, filter etc?  If anyone needs the actual machine for spares, it's the drive mechanism for the belt that's failed, so maybe the rest could be useful to someone - to pick up from central-ish Acton.

Burglary on Grove Rd

Hi allJust a heads up to all. Now that it is getting darker earlier, it is worth taking extra measures to secure and protect your house. We came home on Friday evening to find that someone had used a crowbar to force open our front window. We did have a lock on the window, but it wasn't enough to stop the entry.We think the break-in happened around 4pm. Unfortunately no one saw anything.The police recommended that we put stoppers which are visible from the outside on the front windows as this can be a deterrent. The police also said that there hasn't been a lot of break-ins in the area recently. They mentioned some on Horn Lane, but nothing really around Churchfield road.If anyone did bychance see anything- please let me know!

Acton Dining Club

As there were so many good ideas to eat well and frugally, I thought I would start a new thread for these austere days.. Here we can post receipes, offers to split economy sized bags of products, tips on marketing, and any further thoughts on communal dining. I know such supper clubs already exist in Acton. Hello again Piano Girls! But perhaps there is room for more. The club is open to all with an interest in eating and a willingness to share ideas. Bring them on!

Streets littered with empty cans of lager and spirit bottles what community spirit ???

Just bought a house in Poets corner area . Big mistake .... What is going on with the empty lager , vodka bottles thrown aside in the streets . Can't people take their litter home and keep the streets clean OR drink inside their houses .Everyone mentioned the community was great in the area before I bought . What community ??? From the empty cans on the streets unkempt gardens and general litter it look as if no one give a damn about their environment or community

Freed Book Event at Acton Central Bookswap SATURDAY MORNING

A London artists collective called CollectConnect has put together a volume of collected poems, stories and images, and are publishing it as a book they've named 'FreedBook" (more info here: http://freedbook.blogspot.co.uk/). They'd like to release one copy of a FreedBook on station book swap shelves across London. They're going to do this all in one go on Saturday, 24 November. The promoters will hopefully be taking photos and videos as they go around, and it would be a great opportunity to promote our book swap. Luckily we are first so it shouldn’t be later.
