MORE housing in Acton - but what about schools?

As you may be aware, there are not enough places in our local schools for the current demand. Our schools are being shoe horned with porta cabins to meet demand - reducing already cramped places to play, eat, assemble etc! Are you aware that the children at Derwentwater have to eat in shifts often complaining they didn't have enough time to finish! There is no space for a new school we are being told - but there is space to redevelop the Oaks to include a FURTHER 124 residential units...are these retirement homes / or for home education only ...as this is only going to add to our problems with school places in central Acton.  Members of the town planning consultancy Maddox & Associates will be on hand to explain the proposals and respond to any questions in Unit 10 in The Oaks, from 10am - 4pm, on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th June - There are some Derwentwater parents planning to attend this meeting on Saturday at 10.30 please join us if you're free. This is one of many proposed developments - Shakespear Rd, Creswick Rd ....What is the council thinking?

Priorities!

I live on the border - so nearly W12 - and we often feel like the last, forgotten outpost as far as the LA is concerned.  Didn't think that would stretch to a community forum such as this! On Sunday, at the junction of Acton Vale and Davis Road - it was obvious a really serious incident had taken place overnight.  Road cordoned off; forensics tent; guarded by police officers (who would not divulge anything; fair enough at that point).  It's NEWS, thought I; it'll be on the ActonW3 forum, and I'll find out what happened 500 yards from my house.  Just being nosey?  Probably.  But my own and my family's safety in walking our local streets carries some importance for me. Even a mention of this incident on this on this site?  Nada.  But it's all ablaze with Toby Young's son being robbed of a few pounds... It seems that those who shout loudest will always be heard, and that real news, almost certainly a violent death, can be drowned out by the noisy protestation of the self-important.  A point that many tried to make about Mr Young and his cohorts' ability to set up their own school at the expense of those around him with less clout...

Dog shit in childrens play area

I was absolutely appaled to discover yesterday evening that a dog owner had allowed their dog into the childrens play area on the South Acton Recreation ground and the dog had then shit under the childrens slide where there is seating. Not only is it disgusting it is an actual health risk. Dog shit can carry a bug that blinds children. My 2 yr old pointed it out to me or id never have seen it, i told other parents but, and i sincerely mean this, if i catch any dog owner allowing their dog to do this then they will sincerely regret it.I am sorry to be blunt but its bad enough having what id term fight dogs or prats dogs running around without leads but to have them shit in a designated and fenced off childrens play area is beneath contempt.I have informed the council so it can be cleaned up properly as it is not easily removed.

Council £85m Cuts Proposals

I was at the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday where the Labour council outlined the need for budget savings totaling £85m over 4 years and placed the blame squarely on the Coalition Government.  It is interesting that this figure has changed at least three times in as many weeks. The figure is also not strictly true.  Whilst some of our fiscal problems will inevitably end up in local authority finances - the figures being quoted are misleading and open to challenge. Conservative opposition calculations show that of the £85m now being suggested as a saving target around 2/3rd of all the "cuts" can't be explained by changes in Government Formula Grant. For example spending £3.5m bringing council house management back into the council - money that could have kept libraries open and park ranger services intact - is a council decision.Our analysis also show that the councils' "30% budget cuts" story is based on figures that would require an accountant 20 minutes to explain. The schools budget is the same this year as last year. The councils net spending on services is up year on year!These are challenging times for everybody, but it would help if we could have a real debate about the real extent of the councils financial position rather than the current narrative which is designed to provide cover for changes to services.I apologise for the long post. Redevelopment of the Oaks

I see this is to be by "Delegated Decision", how big does something actually have to be to be by "Committee Decision"?  I would have thought this would qualify - 120 new residential units + shops seems quite large to me!I mean if this gets assigned to one of the usual rookie antipodean Planning Officers in Ealing then they might not really have that much of a feel for the area, and the feelings of us locals.

Have I missed something?  The last few years the cost of this has been negligible,  a sum I hardly missed I think about £45.00,  it still irritated that I had to pay it mind.Well I have just renewed on line my CPZ residents permit and got a book of 3 hour visitors vouchers to the tune of £82.50.  I would love to know WHY the cost has doubled. How can it possibly be justified?  HOW???  Money making scam for the Council!
