Family History Course starts Tuesday 20th April

There is a new Family History on the Internet 10 week course starting at Chiswick Adult Education on Tuesday 20th April.  Class is from 3 -5 p.m. and is held at Chiswick Community School in Staveley Road, just a trip on the E3 bus from Acton.Whilst the  course is suitable for beginners it is even more useful for those who have done some work already on their family tree.  Students will improve their IT skills and learn of many useful websites and how to get the most from them.

Central Line - Sunday 18/04/2010 PM

Does anyone know what happened to the Central Line last night?  I was trying to get back from Ickenham to North Acton at about 11 o'clock and was told that there'd be "no more trains tonight" after a train hit an metal object on the line at Perivale.Anyone else have similar travel problems last night on the line?

The Infidel - better than its reviews

Just got back from seeing this comedy movie written by David Baddiel. It's about the British Muslim who finds he was born Jewish and is helped by Richard Schiff(Toby in the West Wing) to explore his roots.   Wasn't hoping for much as the reviews were mediocre - with the Jewish Chronicle giving it the worst I have ever seen - but the large - 75+ maybe - audience at Park Royal Vue laughed throughout. And what was a hoot was the Muslim in-jokes (panned by JC as insensitive) got a great reaction from the quite widely head-scarved audience. Obviously better watched in a predominantly Muslim cinema than in Golders Green.It's not playing many places so you might want to catch it soon and locally

Have you lost a rabbit?

A rabbit appeared in my friend's garden on Easter Sunday (honestly!) It's a tri-coloured brown, quite large rabbit. It was found in Woodhurst Rd in Poet's Corner area. He has put up posters but no-one has come forward to claim him/her. He is being very well looked after but he'd probably like to return to his proper home!Please get in touch if you can shed any light on who it belongs to.Thanks

In memory of Coco

My dog Coco passed away in his sleep yesterday. He would have been 14 yrs old in July. Lucily he had no illnesses, he just grew old and tired. We will miss him so much.

Nuisance Calls

Found this out yesterday after getting 3 nuisance calls in a row:If you've been getting nuisance calls where as soon as you answer the caller hangs up, do not panic, it is not a weirdo, it is infact a 'market research company' checking your number. Next time it happens dial 1471. If the number you hear is 002135371000 then you have been called by a 'market research company' in Algeria. What will happen next is that you start receiving calls 2-3 times a day offering you life insurance, will writing services etc. The company in Algeria is calling UK numbers to see if they are still active, if they are (as you prove when you answer the phone), your number goes on a list to be sold to cold callers. You cannot ban this number from calling you as it is international, but please, and especially inform the elderly of this, if anyone calls asking you to do a market research survey, put the phone down otherwise you will be plagued with nuisance calls and cold callers for months afterwards.

Polite schoolchildren on the tube

Travelling back from central London on the Picadilly line last week I was very impressed by the behaviour of a group of schoolchildren from Acton High School. The carriage was packed and when adults (including me) got on each of the boys sitting down got up to offer their seats.They also chatted to each other amiably and calmly and you could see what a good impression they were making on all the people on the train; credit where it's due!

New speed limit for cyclists and mothers with young children in Acton Park.

Noticed this, this morning. Resist DfID's destruction-Film showing in Acton this Saturday

On Saturday 17th April at 6pm at the West London Trade Union club on 33-35 Acton High street, there will be a unique film showing how communities and especially women are taking on minining companies in India. This is made worse by with are policies of privatisation and cuts in the public sector which are destroying peoples lives across the world(Britain, India, Africa, Middle East). What role UK Aid is playing in all this?  This is a great chance to bring your thoughts and reflections on international events and make links with what is happening locally and raise questions on what kind of development we really want.
