Given that it's now April - maybe time for a 2013 thread on films to watch and avoidBecause I was in cruel, husband-baiting mode, I took him along to A Late Quartet....though I knew - cos he said so - that he'd hate it. And it was pretty bad with a dreadful clunky script and (according to him) some wholly implausible violin playing. And a revolting sub-plot with a frisson of peadophilia.But Christopher Walken was ace. And it had Wallace Shawm and Mahder Jaffrey in bit parts.Shame that Philip Seymour Hoffman - whom I generally really like - was rather weak. And then we came home and watched teh latest Jonathan Creek episode which was diabolically bad and made the Quartet seem just mildly unfortunate. Ho hum

Temporary traffic ban on access to Acacia Road from Horn Lane

Browsing through the Ealing Gazette I spotted a notice from the Council stating as from 17 February for a temporary period traffic will not be able to access Acacia Road from both directions on Horn Lane (it did state Acton Lane but assume meant Horn Lane). Apparently work is needed to replace a faulty exchange. Am flagging up as lots of drivers use Acacia to get to nearby roads.

Need to borrow a pair of vice-grip needle-nose pliers please :)

Pronunciation of Steyne

How do you pronounce "Steyne", as in Steyne Rd, The Steyne and Steyne House? Despite it probably being Acton's oldest street name, there seems to be no consensus on how you say it. I favour "stain", by analogy with words like "grey", "whey", "hey" "Spey" etc, while others prefer "steen", by analogy with no other word I can think of at the moment. One early spelling of it was "Stein", and as it's the Old English word for "stone/stony", perhaps there's a case for saying "stine", or even "stainy".Anyway, if I need to say it, I usually go: "Stain Road, you know, Steen Road, y'know, that road that goes from ..." etc. It is a strange road, after all, running north from the police station a short way, turning right into ... Steyne Rd, then almost immediately stopping by the Duke of York pub. To confuse matters further, the surviving row of old cottages behind Morrisons bears the sign: "Steyne Road", so does Steyne Road also turn right here?Well, as you can see, I have too much time on my hands, but please answer here and tell me which way you pronounce "Steyne". Thanks.

Nusience calls - 6 today so far!

Is anyone else bothered with constant nusience calls? These are becoming a real pain despite the fact that we signed up to prevent such calls.One such caller even rang twice today, finally I told him to get lost!Any ideas folks?

£5:95 scam website in Acton! Read para 8.

A major US consumer protection group is warning about a new scam that could see UK consumers' debit and credit cards hit with an unexplained charge of $9.84 (£5.95).The Better Business Bureau (BBB) says the scam relies on the fact that many people do not check their credit card statements in detail.Criminals use stolen data to charge a card with the small sum of $9.84. When victims investigate where the cash has gone, they find they have unwittingly paid a website promising a lucrative "online program".The websites promise they will "refund 100% of your last payment", but it is not known whether they do or how many people have tried to claim.The BBB said: "Victims report calling the ‘customer support' site and receiving verbal confirmation that the charge would be cancelled. However, don't take the scammers at their word."Contact your bank to report the charges and request a new credit card. Your card card information has been compromised, and it's likely scammers will be back for more."The scam was first uncovered by ex-Washington Post columnist Brian Klebs on his website, Klebs on Security. Klebs traced the scam to a wider network of operators stretching from Cyprus to India and the United Kingdom.Klebs also found that one of the websites can be traced to a business park in Acton, north west London, meaning the scam could potentially hit UK consumers' cards.The 'genius' idea behind it is clearly that most people will either not notice, or not bother to look into small amounts charged to their cards, netting criminals large amounts collectively.$9.84 translates to about £5.95 at today's exchange rates. So if you see this sum or even the dollar amount charged to your credit or debit card for a service you do not think you have purchased, contact your bank immediately.

advice on selling a car

Has anyone got a few tips on the best way for me to sell my car? a fiat Panda Eleganza.. I want to sell it as I rarely use it and it sits outside my house costing me money. In the past I have exchanged and bought another car, so this selling without buying again is new to me. I am reluctant to put for sale on the wind sceeen. I have approached my garage man and he is looking out for a possible buyer.. But,  should I go for Gum tree or is there another better magazine? Any advice appreciated.

UKIP, Everyone has the right to bare arms...policy?

Now UKIP has really lost the plot.Everyone has the right to own a licensed firearm/hand gun.  I know people I wouldn't trust with a water pistol, let alone the real McCoy.  Are UKIP pushing us towards an American style of culture?If everyone had the right to own a licenced hand gun, then we would have to arm the police.  Mind you, it's not that easy to get a licence, and there are many hoops to jump through.  Nigel Farage MEP what a misguided fool you are.Discuss!

TNT deliveries - Shambles and Royal Mail not much better

Walking along Pierrepoint Road Monday morning and noticed TNT bike abandoned outside 2 Pierrepoint Road but assumed he/she making deliveries. Walking back same way in the evening bike with satchel still on the ground and noticed an item of post on the ground which I reposted but it is alarming that this bicycle was just left along which public post left in the street, especially with all the identity fraud etc.  Did anyone else see/or report anything. Royal Mail is not much better/leaving mail on steps and delivery guys unable to read legible mail, and if unsure they deliver to the wrong addresses, never used to be like this. Reported but not much seems to get done!!

fibreglass or single membrane PVC flat roofing

All,Has anyone had their flat roof re laid using either the new fibreglass or single membrane PVC products ands if so, can you recommend anyone that does this?I want a company that specialize in this type of things and not a general builder that may have "done a few".Thanks in advance.Carl

Another power cut

Last Tuesday we were hit with a power cut at 10.30pm that lasted until 5pm the next day. This blacked out all  shops and flats  at Acton Hill .SE told us they would need to take the power down again on order to rectify this. Which they did from 8.30pm Wednesay. We closed the restaurant at this pointband called it a day.Tonight at 6.20pm it went again. SE had obviously done a botched patch up job. We didn't see any action until after 10pm when they arrived to inspect the joke they had dug the week before. Absolutely ridiculous !

Why can't I persuade the council to pick up missed recycling collection?

The paper and food guys missed me last Thursday... I saw them approaching as I left home in the morning.When I returned it was all still there - so I emailed Streetwatchers.The reply - early Friday said they couldn't pick up before Monday (can't really see why not!) Blow me, Monday came and went and no sign of any action.I bet they say today that it's not worth coming till Thursday now.Really a rubbish service...

Temporary lights Uxb Rd/Gun Lane

I assume the same contractor who worked on the roundabout by Morrisons is working on the lights on Uxbridge Rd/Gunnersbury Lane. 2 weeks now and I cant see any progress - just long tailbacks.

Thai Nice and Aeronaut

Taking advice from a previous post I walked from Grafton to the Thai Nice restaurant and avoided the hell of Acton high street and the Morrisons area .Some great houses and streets walking the back routes .. Definitely worth discovering .To the point ate at the Thai Nice .  Great local , huge portions and very keenly priced . Service was very friendly and welcoming and the food not bad . Will return On way back popped into the Aeronaut . Bar last Friday was very young crowd ( 20ish at the most ) but very impressed with decor and garden . Didn't have cabaret tickets but from what I could see it look very interesting and wet my appetite to book for another weekend . Crowd that came out during the interval was more of a mixed age group and all had very positive reviews of the show . I hope it doesn't become a student venue as it deserves more
