Council locking out criminals Published 23 May 2013Ealing Council’s scheme to improve home security by installing gates in alleyways is being made easier and quicker for residents to apply for.Alley gates installed by the council to cut crime The scheme allows residents to apply to the council to install robust steel gates in alleys alongside homes to protect them from opportunist criminals. Thousands of residents’ properties have already been made safer by these gates, which help reduce burglary, fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour. Ealing Council’s cabinet agreed on Tuesday, 21 May, to cut the waiting time for residents applying to the scheme by introducing three application periods a year. Previously residents could apply for gates at any time throughout the year but these would only be considered in February for work to start in the following financial year. Using information from the police on crime trends and where gating schemes are most likely to prevent criminal behaviour, applications will now be considered in August, November and April each year. Under the new process residents will need to get their neighbours’ consent for gates to be fitted when they apply to the council to remove the need for a lengthy consultation period at a later stage. Councillor Ranjit Dheer, cabinet member for community services and safety, said: “Gating is a simple, effective way for residents to work together to protect their homes and businesses.
